I was reading an LA Times story on the spending by the Dodgers and the Angels, one thing bothered me about the article, why do people always say, "The Angels dropped $375 million on Hamilton and Pujols"? No, they didn't, they dropped the annual salary. It's not like they gave them both the full amount up front.

Seems like accuracy should be important, they say the Dodgers gave Greinke $119 million or whatever it was, that's also wrong.

Those contracts are guaranteed. They did give them that and it could have a big effect down the road if/when they aren't playing or aren't living up to that contract (see: Yankees). Most people get that.

    See: Bonilla, Bobby.

The Mets are still on the hook to pay him $1.1 million a year through 2035.

Huh, I had no idea the Mets are also paying Bret Saberhagen $250,000 annually through 2029. That's awesome.

Saberhagen began receiving payments in 2004. That's the precedent the Mets used when they offered Bonilla his far more lucrative deal.

When the Rangers went through their bankruptcy in 2010 (right when they got good), it came out they still owed Mark Freaking McLemore seven figures. McLemore hasn't been an active Ranger since 1999.

I think A-Rod also took a haircut in the deal.

I remember reading something about Ruben Sierra in the late 1990s, when he was going through the traditional cycle of an aging slugger -- team signs him on potential, he has a good spring, disappoints during the regular season or gets hurt, gets released, moves on to the next town like a shady monorail salesman.
Sierra went through a stretch where he played for five major league teams in six seasons, plus a team in the Dominican or somewhere like that. ALL of them were paying him. He was making several million dollars a year from the Yankees despite playing for three or four teams since they'd released him.

Just heard off of TV tonight is the Rangers' first scheduled doubleheader since 1991.

Colby Rasmus just hit a double off his brother Cory.

    That was a great moment.

What is the likelihood that two major leaguers named Van Slyke are unrelated?

I'm sure Dad beat the crap out of Cory for that.

According to the Braves' broadcast, it was just the third time one brother had batted against another in a major-league game in the last 30 years, after Ken & George Brett and Julio & Ruddy Lugo.
