Yanks-A's are in middle of 17th.

Yankees' old guys in the lineup are killing them. Hafner, Youkilis and Wells are a combined 0-for-20 with 7Ks and 16 LOB.

EDIT: Make that now 0-23 with 9Ks.

On some teams, the closer isn't even the best relief pitcher. The only real difference between the set-up guy who pitches an inning at a time and the closer is mental. Some guys just handle the role better than others. That may be the best reason to hold off on using the closer until/unless your team gets him a lead to protect. Just keeping relief pitchers in roles where they are most comfortable.

    Certainly true with the Dodgers.

Jansen is light years ahead of Brandon League.

In the "killing two birds with one stone" department, Mariano Rivera just gave up a walk-off single to the A's after entering the game in a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 18th inning.

@larryfleisher: In two long games within the last week, the Mets and Yankees combined for 38 innings, went 1-for-32 with RISP, stranded 36, had 34 Ks

Troy Tulowitzki has a broken rib. One estimate has him out 3-to-4 weeks. Another has 4-to-6 weeks just to heal before he can start rehab.

Fantastic player, but he just can't stay healthy. Given his history, I'd bet on two months at least before he returns to the field.

No question about that. Jansen is scary good.

284 k's and just 69 walks in 179.2 innings. 14.2 K/9, he should have been closer all year.

He has pitched 180 innings this year? I know those can't be career totals because last year is no indication of what will happen this year.

    Those are career numbers.

Unless you were using blue font ....

Such archaic bullshit. Always good to lose not giving your best reliever a chance.
