Giants pull Matt Cain with two outs in the first inning and the Mets already leading 3-0. Cain's previous start was eight runs in 2 1/3 IP.

"Defending champions" no longer applies to the Giants. They aren't defending. They might be worse than the Marlins and Astros.

The Gants are done for 2013. This collapse seems surreal.

MLB doesn't care about that. Not if it helps them look tough on PED use and gives them an excuse to punish Braun for making them look bad as a bonus.

Or an excuse for giving him the punishment he earned when he got caught with synthetic testosterone in his system.

Welp. The Rangers put Yu Darvish on the DL with a right forearm strain.

That leaves Derek Holland as the Rangers' only opening-week starter left.

And the beat goes on for the Giants -- Chad Gaudin was arrested in a hospital in Las Vegas in January on charges that he groped a 23-year-old woman's breast while she was on a gurney at 4:30 a.m. He told her not to worry about the hospital folks and that he'd take care of her. (He is married, but I'm going to take a wild guess that it wasn't his wife on the gurney.)

Police report noted that he appeared intoxicated. Shocking, I know. But his lawyer has a perfectly reasonable explanation: Chad suffers from rhabdomyolysis.

On January 27, 2013, Chad Gaudin was examined in the emergency room of a local hospital while experiencing symptoms believed to be related to acute renal failure due to a condition known as rhabdomyolysis. The symptoms included confusion, dehydration and loss of orientation and/or consciousness. Although he has been accused of improperly touching another hospital patient while on the premises that night, there are differing and exonerating versions of what occurred that have been reported by eye witnesses. Mr. Gaudin denies any unlawful conduct and has been cooperating with the authorities. I am confident that this matter will be resolved in his favor and because it is pending in court there will be no further comment.

Miggy 3-4 tonight, just hit RBI-single to give him 93 RBIs -- 6th player with 93 RBIs before ASG.

Not taking anything away from Cabrera, but the All-Star Game is a week later this year than it has been most years. Most teams will have played 95 or so games by the All-Star break this year, which is almost 60 percent of the season.

All these "before the All-Star break" records, should really be calculated through 81 games. That passed about two weeks ago.

The All-Star break is never the true halfway point of the season, because that usually occurs around July 4. And the last thing teams want to do is take 3 days off during what is traditionally one of the biggest attendance weeks of the year.

The true halfway point isn't even in July.

SABR member Diane Firstman agrees with you.

Most common All-Star Game date is July 11 and July 13 (11 times each), followed by July 10 (9) and July 9 (8). This is only the second All-Star Game to be played on July 16 (1985).

In 2008, MLB teams had played an average of 95.1 games by the All-Star Game, which was held on July 15.

Latest All-Star Game date, excluding the two-game years, was in 1972 when it was held July 25. (The second game in 1959 was held August 3.)

He has a special breast-groping permit from the city, but his brother and his friends took it this morning.
