And on the other side of the division, with one out in the second inning, Tim Lincecum has given up two doubles, two home runs and is down 5-0. The Reds admirably defend Johnny Vander Meer's place in history.

Mets blow a 1-0 lead in the 9th. Braves score twice, then the Mets get two on against Kimbrel with two out. Justin Turner pinch-hits and sends a ball deep into the gap. Heyward makes a diving catch to save the game.

Given that the Rogers suspended Mike Wilner of The Fan 590 briefly a couple of years ago for not being sufficiently homerific, why wouldn't Arencibia expect/demand a similar consequence for Zaun and Hayhurst?

    I'm only half kidding.

Wilner is a sympathizer and an apologist. Zaun and Hayhurst are neither. Arencibia should shut up and do his fucking job.

At least this one is still able to slug on occasion.

Yankees working on a deal for Alfonso Soriano:

What's one more aging, overpaid slugger?

They've got A-Rod and Vernon Wells. This would complete the set.

Josh Johnson implodes again. I can't remember a guy going into free agency shitting the bed as badly as he has. Even the Yankees and Dodgers won't overpay for this guy.

Wells is just overpaid. He's not a slugger any more.

Rodriguez is done, either due to the quad or a PED suspension or both.

That's a good deal for the Red Sox. Did Pedroia get enough?

Although Pedroia compares favorably to Cano statistically and is 10 months younger,
Cano could realize an average annual value of close to $20 million.

Is it? Pedroia turns 30 in a few weeks, meaning he'll be 38 in the final year of the contract.

The list of modern-era second basemen who were still elite players past their middle 30s is not long.

Chase Utley hasn't played 120 games in a season since turning 31. Dan Uggla fell off a cliff at the same age. Ian Kinsler looks to be headed down one of those paths or the other.

Craig Biggio had his last great year at 35, Bobby Grich at 34, Robert Alomar at 33, Ryne Sandberg at 32. Rod Carew moved to first base at 30.

Joe Morgan had one last gasp great year at 38, but that was after four straight sub-par seasons from ages 34-37.

About the only post-1970 second baseman who was still an elite hitter after 35 was Jeff Kent, and I think we know why.

Maybe Pedroia's an outlier, but I would think a deal about half as long would have been more prudent, especially since he was already locked up through 2015 anyway.
