Great. Another closer named Jose from the Astros. That worked so well the last time. :D

    This.

It makes no difference to me that Timmons missed his (badly) and Fairchild missed both of his (Both of his were up, and one may have been outside too, but they were both for sure up).

From the National Pastime Museum FB page:

Baseball almost always sells itself. But, as the Brewer's $10 voucher program attests http://ow.ly/nqIHa, it doesn't hurt to have added incentive at times. Historically, Cleveland stadium was often a tough sell. So, in the 1940s a race was staged between Olympic hero Jessie Owens and George Case. Looks like a pretty close match!

Braves get Scott Downs from the Angels for Cory Rasmus.

    http://tracking.si.com/2013/07/29/scott-downs-braves-trade-angels-cory-rasmus/?sct=mlb_t2_a4

Downs, didn't cover himself in glory with his final appearance for LAA, giving up a home run to the first batter he faced Saturday against the A's to cough up a one-run lead, but other than that he's been pretty steady in an inconsistent bullpen this year.

Don't know much about Rasmus -- hope this trade works out better for the Halos than the last pitcher-for-pitcher swap with the Braves.

He's the scoop on Cory Rasmus:

    1. Colby's younger brother.

    2. Gives up homers like crazy.

    Enjoy ...

(Anyway, even after the Hanson-for-Walden trade, the Angels still have one up on the Braves for the Mark-Teixeira-for-the-corpse-of-Casey-Kotchman deal in 2008. Yeah, I know Tex left, but the Angels turned the comp pick into Mike Trout).

    Great!

Point taken on the Teixeira trade, though -- that did work out well for the Angels. I was surprised to see Kotchman fall off the cliff like he did after that; I felt he still had some potential after the trade.

Company ballteam in a big series against the Cards tonight. Normally an AL guy but ready to get my double switch on.

Not entirely MLB related, but it's been a pretty good season for a friend of mine. The high school team he coaches went over .500 for the first time in over 30 years, and for the second time in as many years were one run away from winning their league championship.

Then a kid he used to coach (at another school) goes on to make and pitch in the MLB All Star game.

Then while coaching in an All Star game this past weekend, sees one of his players earn the top play on Sportscenter. Found out about it while having a few beers at nearby bar when he saw it. Apparently the kid who made the catch is a better person than a player, but everyone was still really happy to see it happen to him.

Brewers giving a $10 credit for food and drink at every home game in August. Total outlay is expected to be $3.6 million, or slightly more than they're saving on Ryan Braun's suspension.

    Not a bad PR move.

As horseshit as they are the Brewers should have doing this before he finally got the suspension he deserved.

I'm going to see Astros-Orioles later this week at Camden Yards. I wonder if the Astros will have anybody I've heard of on the roster by then.

Erik Bedard is still there (for now).
