See, that's the line I thought was sort of weak.
I guess the line was good. But the delivery sounded kind of eighth-grade.

As I recall, Todd Walker was in on that, too. And it all started when Stone was a little too effusive (in the players' minds) in praising Roy Oswalt when he was white-washing the Cubs.

I love baseball. It's my favorite sport by far.

But I'd never want to cover it as a beat writer, because I hate ballplayers.

I didn't see it as 8th-grader'ism. Without saying it he told Phillips to fuck himself with that line.

Not sure how many guys would have had the wherewithal to sling that back. It was just a funny line.

This is tame compared to Brett Myers-Sam Carchidi.

I don't know, I think Trent's comeback had a little more bite on the outside corner.

Sam Carchidi: “You thought they both were pop ups?”
Brett Myers: “Yeah, didn’t you? You think they crushed ‘em?”
SC: “The first one I thought was out, the second one no.”
BM: “Yeah, cause you’re a retard, you don’t know s**t about f***in’ baseball. You’re filling in for somebody.”
SC: “How do you spell ‘retard’?”
BM: “You know how to spell it, it’s in your f**in’ vocabulary, I’m sure you know.”
SC: “You are classy, I’ll tell ya.”
BM: “Go on. [Get] outta here, you f**in’ idiot.”
SC: [pointing at Brett Myers] “You’re the f**in’ idiot.”
BM: “Hey! You pointin’ at me mother****er?! I’ll tell you what, dude, I’ll knock you mutherf***ing out! F**K YOU!!! You’re tough when f**in’ people are standing in front of you, aren’t you, you piece of sh*t! Come on! You f**ing idiot. Yeah, you’re tough when f***in’ people are standing in front of you, you stupid ass.”
    SC: “I’m a retard?”
BM: “Yeah, that’s right, YOU ARE, you’re a f***ing idiot. You ask stupid ass f***ing questions!”

Most of them are OK. Just stunted, maturity-wise. Then they go from adolescent to grumpy old man overnight. It's strange. My experience is that players and regular beat writers mostly get along. I recall a controversy breaking on a Sunday, and my manager raising holy hell on Monday that it happened only because Sunday was amatuer day. So this was surprising.

I always struggled more with the language barrier in the sport than personality issues.

Was this before or after Myers punched his wife in the face on a Boston street?

So the ball left the yard, Myers thought it was a pop-up off the bat, the reporter thought it was gone ... but the reporter is the "retard"?

    Well, that was rather odd.
