I wonder if the Mariners would send Morse back in a package for both?

Nah. He doesn't walk enough. The fact that Rizzo and the Nats botched their two No. 1 overall picks, I'm sure Selig is about to step in at any moment, fire everyone, and move the team back to Montreal.

    Bums. All of em.

I've been to two straight games now where Harper did NOT hit a home run. TWO! Seriously, he's finished at 20?? Winners win. They find a way to get that ball out of the yard.

In our predictions rail in the preview section we did, I used "biggest surprise" and "biggest disappointment" as two of the categories.

My biggest surprise was Ross Detwiler makes the All-Star team.
My biggest disapointment was Stephen Strasburg does not.

Of course, Detwiler is going to have a 1.19 ERA and a 2-11 record in July so I guess that's out. He's been lights out in five straight starts and has ONE win. Hell, send him to Seattle in that deal, too.

In all seriousness, will baseball ever get to the point where advanced statistics are considered the norm? Standard fantasy leagues still use wins, RBi and batting average while leaving out WAR, OBP and OPS. Broadcasts still overhype wins, RBIs and batting average as well.

    Advanced statistics. Oy.

When things like "ballpark factor," which is subjective, are a part of them, I would hope not. We understood baseball just fine without all the hoo-haa. And some of my very best friends are sabermeticians. I love them but not their sliderule stats. One of the reasons I enjoy baseball is it is a simple sport a dumbass like me can understand. People who like to sound smart throw out this stuff and I can just sit and shake my head.

    Bapip my crapip.

    OBP is an "advanced statistic"?

Or, you know, they find it interesting and enlightening.

Also, as has been noted here many times, Moddy, something like BABIP would (should) never be used in a discussion about whether one player has been better than another. At the same time, it can often help in predicting what a player's performance might look like in the future. Why is that a bad thing?

That's fine. Be interesting and enlightening out of earshot and let me enjoy my peanuts and drink while I watch a simple game. Sneer at me for being dull and unenlightened. Then shove that BAPIP square up your ass!!
