Recruiting rankings are based on how players project at the college level. Rivals had Manti Te'o No. 12, behind No. 1 Bryce Brown among others. The only player above Te'o who may have had a better college career is Trent Richardson.

The rankings generally work best at positions like wide receiver and linebacker, where great athletes can shine without as much help from teammates. Chance Warmack, a three-year starter and three-time champion rated as the best guard prospect since Steve Hutchinson, was a three-star recruit.

I like hearing that. It's refreshing to see Shaw stay at Stanford and Charlie Strong stay at Louisville rather than get eaten up and spit out at some medium-level SEC school.

Prior to last night he had two missed tackles this season. All season. Dude had a bad game. Alabama made the whole team look pretty helpless.

For how many guys is that really much different from how they project in the NFL? Perhaps the occasional quarterback. That's about it.

If you don't think his stock dropped last night, you're kidding yourself.

    I didn't say that.

That's absurd. Look at all the small and fast wide receivers and running backs or 270-pound interior linemen who become great college players. I haven't looked over the numbers, but I doubt more than half of most years' first-team all-Americans are first-round draft picks.

And I bet those 270-pound interior linemen were not highly ranked by the recruiting services coming out of high school.

Here's the 2008 Rivals Top 150. How many of the top 30 or so guys were first-round picks?

Well #68 from 2008 just went number 1 overall.

    And I chuckled at #71 from 2009.

Which is about right now that we know he isn't the second coming of Cam Newton, doesn't it?

He's likely to come back for another year, but man, after seeing him regress hard this year, I kinda hope he turns pro. He'll be a second round pick at best. Deadline is soon, right?

Oh, and don't worry. Maryland showed up on those lists. Once. :)
