It's the endless cycle of overreaction, Mizzou. Teams see the success of Luck, Griffin and especially Wilson this year, so they're more willing to take a flyer on a QB in the first round. When the class of 2013 has a high washout rate (likely considering the historic success rate of the class of 2012), they'll overreact and pass up what turn out to be good quarterbacks in 2014.
FWIW, despite the uneven (to be kind) record of USC quarterbacks, if I had to take a flyer, I'd pick Barkley.

I talked with Luke Joeckel's grandfather the other day (he plays golf at the club I do, and I play with him and his early-morning geezer group every now and then). Kind of interesting hearing semi-inside tales about how life is when you're waiting on tenterhooks to, maybe, be the No. 1 pick. Joeckel comes from a very nice family, BTW.

fwiw, michael gee, i'm at the opposite end of the spectrum on barkley... usc players have oft been vastly overrated, in recent years, most strikingly at qb. this kid has good enough size but doesnt have the kind of running skills teams are looking for in modern qb's; the pocket passers had best have strong arms and he's much mor geee matt linart than carson palmer. dont get me wrong, i'd certainly be happy to spend a no. 2 or 3 pick on him but if i'm in need for an immediate starter type i'd shy away in round 1.

he could certainly turn out to be a good nfl qb but the draft is supposed to be about weighing the odds; a round 1 qb has so much pressure and expectations attached to them i'd want to be more convinced the guy's the real deal than 'take a flyer.' but hey, maybe that's just me.

What do Matt Leinart and Mark Sanchez have to do with Matt Barkley? Why doesn't Carson Palmer apply? It's a different coach.

I wouldn't take any of these quarterbacks in the first round, but if I did, it would be Barkley.

Shock, Versatile just said what I was trying to say. I wouldn't take Barkley with a first round pick unless I was picking like 23rd or lower, which means I already have a quarterback, and would be stupid to pick him there. I merely think he's got a better chance of NFL success/steady work than the other guys.

It can't be a good sign for the 2013 crop of QBs that the Jaguars new GM has indicated they'll stick with Gabbert, whose selection did more than anything else to get his predecessor fired.

Which is why they're all throwing at the combine -- hoping to generate enough buzz to get a team to bite.

Hell, a few years ago, teams would have to find out if there was a QB that they liked and then decide if they liked him enough to give him $30+ million guaranteed... Now, guys like Tannehill, Ponder, Gabbert, RG3, Andrew Luck, Newton are all bargains... It is incentive to reach if you really like a guy.

There may be no QB in this draft who is on the level of the guys who went in the first round last year, but since these guys are no longer going to put teams into salary cap hell, there's a lot of incentive to take a shot on a QB in the first round even if they're not the best player available.

The players you just named fall into two categories 1. Players who will soon stop being bargains when their rookie contracts expire, but who their teams had damn well better pay. 2. Players who may not be bargains because it's still unclear if they are competent NFL quarterbacks.

Ryan Tannehill is a bargain? By "bargain," do you mean "one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL last season"? I'd take him over Blaine Gabbert, sure, but that doesn't mean anything.

He's saying they're bargains because you actually have a chance to figure out if they can play in the NFL before paying them big-time money. In the past, you'd have to guess to take a guy in the first round.

    Yep.

Five years ago, whiffing on Ryan Tannehill would have been ruinous to a franchise. Now it's just a misstep.
