Time is a medium of exchange in the NFL, too. It's no bargain if you wait around three years to get rid of a bust like Gabbert because he came cheaper than other quarterbacks. Your other players who might actually be of contenting caliber are that much closer to being too old to help you anymore, leave via free agency, get hurt, etc.

Well, I'd rather have Gabbert at whatever his rookie contract is worth than at Sam Bradford or JaMarcus Russell money...

There are backup quarterbacks in the NFL who made more last season than Andrew Luck or RG3 did.

One more thing to consider. Opportunity costs. Are the savings from drafting a QB in the first round because he comes relatively cheap worth missing using the pick to select a player at another position who can really help you at the same savings? Plus the lost opportunity costs which come from teams sticking with a first round QB pick because letting one go is an admission of failure that's bad for job security. I mean, is Gabbert really a good deal for the Jags because what the hell, in two years their 2-14 record will let them wind up with Manziel? That's really depending on the kindness of strange season ticket holders.

Using the Jaguars as the example... They have a new GM and a new coach, so they could cut Gabbert loose at any time and blame the previous regime...

Is Gabbert a bargain? Compared to what other teams have had to pay top QB picks who ended up sucking, absolutely... Gabbert's contract, if I remember correctly, was 4-years, $12 million. A guy like that, you can cut loose and move on... You hate wasting a high draft pick on a guy who sucks, but at least it's not a mistake that you're going to be paying for for years to come...

I think we're talking past each other here. The price the Jags are paying for Gabbert is lost seasons. And for that franchise, those equal more ticket revenue lost than they're saving with the pick. My belief is, never reach for a player in the draft. Always pick the best player, period. And if you need a quarterback and you don't think the quarterbacks available are the best number X pick, don't pick 'em. Yes, it's way cheaper to miss with a quarterback draft choice than it used to be, but it's still a very costly mistake.

I agree. But a team has reached for the QB in most of the recent drafted.

Yes, they have, and a number of them have come to regret it. Interestingly, the three star rookie QBs of 2012 were not reaches at all. Luck and Griffin were top-rated picks before the draft and Wilson was picked in the third round.

    Draft is getting closer...

I still think that if the Chiefs keep the pick, Joeckel has to be the pick.

I'm still very curious where Geno Smith will go. I've read so much negative about him lately, and it's always pointed out that they were saying the same thing about Cam Newton, but I don't get the sense that Smith is as Newton's level.

I still think Manti Te'o falls out of the first round.

I haven't been this MEH about the NFL Draft in a long time. Part of it, obviously, is because my team doesn't have a first-round pick. But even if it did, there's still very few prospects, if any, to get all fired up about.

I think Smith is going to be the only QB to go in the top 15.

I do think you could see as many as 5-6 gone by the end of the second round though... It seems like Nassib and Manuel have a chance to sneak into the end of the first round. I have no idea how far Barkley is going to fall. I kind of think there's some team that will either trade down or trade back into the first to take him.

Curious to see what Bills fans reactions will be if they do take Nassib.

Former Syracuse coach gets Former Syracuse QB. Good for fans, good for franchise, provided they don't suck.
