Yeah, if there is no QB as a consensus top five pick, it's going to hurt the interest in the draft.

At No. 8, I think they'd have a right to be pissed, or at least wary of it... I think if they trade back and still get him or take him at No. 41, they should be pretty happy.

If Keenan Allen falls as much as people think he will, it will be interesting to see if the Niners grab him if he falls to the end of the first round. I'm guessing he won't fall quite that far.

For all the talk about first-round busts, heard an interesting stat today on the Kiper-McShay podcast ...

Of the 32 first-round picks in the 2011 draft, all but one were at least part-time starters last season. The only one who wasn't was Green Bay OT Derek Sherrod (No. 32 overall), who spent all last season on injured reserve.

I think most mock drafts now have five offensive linemen going in the top 10. SI's latest has five going in the top eight... It's interesting seeing two guards projected to go in the top 10. That doesn't happen too often.

According to the Big 12 mafia on last year's college football thread, Tannehill is proof that the SEC is overrated.

For a QB taken in the first round to be "a bargain" I think you'd have to be talking about someone like Dan Marino or Aaron Rodgers, who fell to the bottom of the first.

Tannehill is nothing resembling a bargain.

I think Tannehill - Sherman is a good lesson for those thinking Bills/Marrone-Nassib is a good match. Hardly a predictor of success in the NFL.

Keenan Allen to SF is geographically convenient but that's it. (Although he's got a better attitude and work ethic than DeSean Jackson.)

I've got serious doubts about Barkley; everything was lined up for him last year and he did so-so.

Someone I know is going to the Draft because their nephew is a projected top 5 pick; very happy for their family.

I remember at the combine several years ago, a few of the scouts were dismissing Leinart because they said he "lacked the drive to succeed in the NFL" and I dismissed it at the time, since Leinart would have been the No. 1 pick previous year. I wonder if people have the same concerns about Barkley. I'm sure it's unfair to judge a guy just because someone else from his school and his position was a bust. But, we all know it happens... I doubt Aaron Rodgers would have fallen as far as he did if almost every other QB that Tedford had coached in college was mediocre (Dilfer), or a bust (Akili Smith, Kyle Boller...).

A lot of the mock drafts have the Niners going for a receiver in the first round. That's why I thought of Allen.

I like Allen and thought he had tremendous potential but Cal never had a QB who could get him the ball consistently (not even his half-brother!). I think as good as their D is/was; more D line help would be better or a corner or safety.

The safety from FIU intrigues me for teams picking late in the first round.
