It certainly sounds like they got the guy they wanted all along. As I read about him, he sounds more like a Joey Porter type than James Harrison. He's just not going to overpower blockers the way Harrison did, but he can be a playmaker in that defense and their pass rush has gotten progressively worse the last couple of seasons.

The only rationale that makes sense for the Vikings is that they have some sort of company retreat incorrectly scheduled to start this afternoon and run through the weekend and the hotel/resort wouldn't return their deposit if they canceled.

God, what a strange first round. At a draft party I went to, we had a handful of guys do mock draft pools. We figured gambling was the only way to make this thing interesting. Anyway, of the 32 picks, I picked two correctly beforehand (First and 14th). I think the winner finished with 8 correct picks. We also did a running picks game, where you make your picks as the draft progresses. Came down to the last pick between me and another guy. I took Te'o. He took Elam. I lost. The winner finished with 8 correct picks.

That first round was fucking WEIRD.

    Also, LOL @ Cowboys.

How accurate was Kiper on the 1st round?

Kiper, I believe, got 7 correct by slot.

Kiper doesn't need me to defend him, but I think he bases his mock drafts on who teams SHOULD take based on their needs, not who they WILL take.

i'd just like to congratulate all teams for grading the qb's based upon what their in-season scouting reports and game tapes told them and not readjusting their ratings/grades based upon all the b.s. chatter that takes place from the combine through the draft.

when the season ended, remember, the consensus was there might be no qb's worth a no. 1 pick; because tams in need of a qb always cause qb ratings to ratchet up pre-draft, 'cause teams see what they want go see, by the time yesterday came the consensus has smith and the syracuse kid possibly going in to top 10 and the florida state kid being grabbed by the end of round 1.

turns out only the kipers and mcshays of the world were going apespit over the qbs, not the teams. the florida state kid, with size, speed and arm strength simlar to cam newton and kaepernick, ended up the only round 1 guy, taken by the syracuse kid's coach! how damning was that for the syracuse kid?

in the end, who knows if smith will stick it to his critics and go aaron rodgers-crzy with this chip on his shoulder pads. or if any of the other qbs turn out to be future stars. but none of these guys were deserving of being taken in round 1 'cause they are way less 'finished projects' than required to deserve that trust before the draft.

i just wanted to say good for gm's, coaches and personnel directors flor going by what their eyes told 'em instead of what the kipers and mcshays told 'em. and it's obvious, too, that plenty of them agreed with the pro football weekly guy who has spent recent days being ripped by everyone for harshly assessing smith and being charged with thinly-veiled racism. sheesh....

Sorry, I think he nailed 8, which is impressive this year.

I wonder how much reporting Kiper does. I don't doubt that he watches a shitload of film, but I don't get the sense that he talks to the people making the picks.

I liked the Manuel pick if only because it shows the Bills duped everyone with their interest in Nassib.

If Geno Smith doesn't show up for Round 2, it will be interesting to see what that does to his draft stock. If the Eagles pass on him in the second round, it will show that there are a ton of red flags on the guy.

Kiper definitely talks to the teams. WHO on those teams, I have no idea. But I assume he's talking to people who can give him a good idea of what's going on.
