Yes, I understood the Stripes reference and the Sanford and Son reference.

I think it's a rare case where an agent directly determines where a player is taken, but I do think that there are some agents who know how to handle a big-name client better than others.

The Niners didn't take Smith because Condon was his agent, they took him because Condon presented Smith to teams in a way where they would want to select him No. 1.

i most respectfully disagree. you portray agents, like condon. as salesman making a pitch to a customer. their sales pitch comes at the negotiating table with the team's $$$ people. any agent who tries to convince you he can influence how a team 'grades' his player is fos. especially with qb's in the no. 1 slot the niners werent going to be swayed away from rodgers, who played in their backyard, because of condon's golden tongue or any animous towards mike sullivan, also a greatly respected bay area guy.

shockey, in the main I agree with you, but Mike Nolan and John York were enough of stooges that they probably could have been (and probably were) swayed.

I think a lot of people think the draft is more voodoo than it really is. Teams rank the players overall and by position and select based on their needs, but mostly try not to reach too much on a pick.
Successful teams in the past tend to continue to be successful no matter where they pick.

that scenario i could imagine -- i dunno that nolan would've had to be swayed. york is stooge enuf to simply order nolan which one to take.

Sounds great, but Rodgers went 24th. Were they all stooges?

Given Tom Condon's successful NFL career I have to think that GM's are likely to listen to his football ideas more than the average agent.

you'd think so, but tom has been an agent for so long now his 'former player' status doesn't factor into his influence with owners. he's respected way more for his success as an agent -- he's surely among the top two or three agents for nfl players. very few of them are so admired on both sides of the aisle, so to speak.

Why would any superstar sign with a small agency? In football, there are three or four choices. In baseball, not being represented by Scott Boras is basically throwing away money. In basketball, I believe there are six power agents.

Choosing outside the box for something like that seems rather unwise, no matter how good your agent is. If you're represented by Drew Rosenhaus, teams know he will fuck them if they fuck you. That can't be said for these smaller agencies.

What are the odds that Geno hires Jay Z as his agent? It would be a big get for Jay Z's burgeoning agency and add to Geno's diva designation.

I completely agree. I think Flacco is probably the most notable exception, especially with quarterbacks.

Condon has both Mannings, Drew Brees, Matt Stafford, Tony Romo, Alex Smith and Matt Ryan. If you're a QB, he's your Scott Boras.
