Under the current format (since 1970), first-ballot coaches are Landry, Knoll and Shula.

So Lombardi and Walsh had to wait?

Lombardi elected as soon as he was eligible, regrettably posthumously, in 1971 But he was still in football as coach of Redskins when the class of 1970 was elected. Walsh elected in his first year of eligibility, too.

I disagree. He'll get in eventually, as he should...

IJAG is going to kill you. And they'll never find the body.

Della, I appreciate your insight, but if you want to be taken seriously as an expert on the Pro Football HOF, you're going to have to spell Chuck Noll's name correctly. The former Steelers coach is not grassy.

My apologies. Was toggling back and forth between like five tabs.

Walsh was elected on his second try. He was a first-time finalist in 1992 but was left out for John Riggins, John Mackey, Lem Barney and Al Davis.

Lombardi is not considered a first-time eligible under the current format because the early rules had him eligible in 1970, the first year of the 15-finalist setup.

Well 21 are coaches, which is probably about right. Not counting Parcells and Cowher, I don't think there is an eligible coach that you can argue has been left out.

    Perhaps.

He is a classic senior committee selection. On the surface a 114-89 record and 3-6 playoff record isn't going to impress. But his impact on offense is obvious.

People forget that coryell also had sustained success with the cardinals in the mid 1970s... the hart, metcalf, otis, smith and gray teams were the beta test for the chargers era.
