    UPDATE

The last few votes are straggling in. I'll post the story and preseason poll by 2 p.m. my time (PDT).

Also, I think we'll keep it in this thread, instead of starting a new thread like previous years. Lots of good discussion on here already.

Let’s put the X in BCS

College football fans! You wanted the best, you ... uh ... might get the best! Get ready for the BCS Farewell Tour!

We’re getting the boys back together for one more rock ’n’ roll psycho circus, targeting the nation’s wallets ... er, hearts and minds. It features these BCS original players:

The DEMON: He breathes fire, he spits blood (crimson colored, of course) and spends every waking moment diagraming plays. He’s the lord of the Tuscaloosa wastelands, a man of steel, and will tell football officials, “I AM THE GOD OF THUNDER ... AND I COMMAND YOU TO KNEEL.”

The CAT MAN: He’s already used several of his nine lives by leaving “lifetime” jobs at Utah and Florida. He’s been known to complain as much or more than he beats the drums for whatever BCS league he’s in at the time. And of course, it’s only a matter of time until he tells fans in Columbus, “You’ll be a hard luck woman, baby, till you find your man.”

The STAR CHILD: Loves to be the center of attention, but even a Heisman trophy can’t quench his thirst for the spotlight. He’ll pout for the girls, drink some cold gin with frat boys in Austin, and even make a few bucks signing his name because he “lives to win” ... at least while he’s still in the BCS. Don’t count on much of a solo career, though.

The SPACEMAN: Lord knows there’s lots of weed and women in Eugene, Ore., but the Spaceman is cleaning up his act for one more shot at the BCS title. Hell, he’s on the cover of Sports Illustrated and could be back in the New York groove for the 2013 Heisman ceremony. Could his awesome skills on the ax and the rockets which launch from his right arm be enough to bring his crew back before Burnt Hamburger, Herbie and all the Tostitos?

Of course, not everyone is welcome as the BCS Farewell Tour party gets rollin’. Among those left off the tour bus:

The WIZ: You can dress up in an Egyptian ankh costume (or all-blue uniforms), be a wizard on your instrument and dazzle thousands of fans with your trick plays, but it still won’t get you on the big boy stage. And after this reunion tour, even ESPN won’t have reason to say your name, because no national playoff contender ever comes from Boise, Idaho. Have fun playing in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion Mountain West.

The FOX: When the BCS began in 1998, this conference had a full-fledged seat at the big boy table. But now that the Catman’s back, the Fox was last seen shuffling away with its drum set and scrounging to find members for its new band, the American Conference.

So without further ado, welcome to the BCS Farewell Tour and enjoy the show! Because as much as some fans like to complain about the makeup, flash and lack of substance, be careful what you wish for. No matter how much makeup you put on a pig, it’s still a pig.

Here's our preseason football poll, and it's no surprise that the Crimson Tide are on top. It's also no surprise that it's not unanimous here at SportsJournalists.com. Actually, the most surprising thing about it, to me anyway, is how close we're following the AP preseason poll. Other than some shuffling of Big 12 teams in the middle, it's almost exactly the same as the AP voters.

Of course, we did our usual good job of picking a variety of teams ... about one-third of the teams playing FBS football this year received at least one vote. I guess it's true, anybody can grow up to be president, or at least BCS champions. That is, until the four-team playoff starts!

Songbird loses the right to claim Alabama as his "second-favorite team" unless Ohio State finishes the season ranked ahead.

Gee, glad to see I wasn't the only one who gave a ceremonial homer vote to Ole Miss. Probably as close as they'll get to the Top 25 all season.

Toledo isn't the Golden Hurricane. That's Tulsa.

What team not in the top 25 do people see as most likely to crack the top 10 this season? I could see Baylor making a run.

Utah State, if the Aggies beat USC, the offense is going cuckoo and they get to 10-0 -- although top 15 is more reasonable.

Damn, I should have thought of the Aggies. That's another good answer. I love me some USU.

I got me my Chuckie Keeton Heisman swag the other day from Utah State.

I could see USC being as big a surprise (in a good way) as it was in a bad way last season. They don't play Oregon, they get Stanford at home. Notre Dame isn't likely to be as good as it was last season.
