Coco, let me know if you got my poll. I got some sort of error when I tried to send it.

Songbird, you're really knocking South Carolina out entirely for that 11-point loss between the hedges? Also:

How USC Boogalooed ... er, Couged ... It

    By I SHOULD COCO
    Wild Honey Guy

A couple years ago, there was talk about the Big 10 and Pac-12 doing a basketball-style “challenge” for their football teams, with all of their schools pairing up once a year for a decent nonconference tilt.

As quickly as visions of Iowa visiting Pullman, Wash., danced in my head, those plans were shelved after the Big 10 decided to expand yet again, and with 14 teams, play nine conference games each fall.

(I’ll note that the Pac-12 was willing to play Big 10 teams despite already playing nine league games ... insert joke about Midwest cupcake eaters here)

At any rate, we’ll still get a handful of games between the two Rose Bowl leagues this season, with four of them scheduled this weekend. While these matchups won’t settle which league is best, they’ll keep us sated until the Tournament of Roses parade steps off on Jan. 1.

On tap this Saturday, in order of interest:

Wisconsin at Arizona State: A chance to see just how good each team is. The Sun Devils, with Boise-area product Taylor Kelly slinging the ball all over the lot, are a bit more challenging than the Badgers’ first two cupcake opponents. But we’ll see if the Sun Devils can stop the Wisconsin running attack.

UCLA at Nebraska: The Cornhuskers owe the Bruins after UCLA used Nebraska for its coming-out party last season. The Bruins might be the class of the Pac-12 South, and should light up the scoreboard in what’s sure to be a shootout in Lincoln. California native Taylor Martinez gets perhaps his last shot at a hometown team.

Washington vs. Illinois, in Chicago: Didn’t think this would be a very good game, but ... surprise! ... the Dying Illini showed signs of life in a dominant win over a decent Cincinnati team last weekend. (Or, maybe Purdue is that bad). The Huskies try to follow up their own impressive win over Boise State.

Ohio State at California: The Bears host their second Big 10 team, and judging by their defense’s inability to stop Northwestern (or even Portland State, really), the Buckeyes should cruise.

So which league is better this season? It could be argued that the best teams in each league (Michigan, Oregon, Stanford) aren’t part of the limited Big 10-Pac 12 festivities, so we’ll just have to hash it out online until bowl season arrives. Or we could just use Notre Dame as a measuring stick, since half of its schedule is against Big 10 or Pac-12 teams.

What do SportsJournalists.com voters say about the relative strength of each league, and the top teams in them? Check out this week’s poll:

I haven't seen Wisconsin so it's tough to tell how dominant its 2-shutout defense is considering the opponents. Even so, Arizona State.

UCLA uses the death of a teammate to be verily focused. Might be the best of the games. UCLA in a squeaker.

Washington v. Illinois? Take the over.

    Ohio State by 30.

Am I missing something or was this season's first game of the century not listed?

I've seen Wisconsin. They were dominant in their shutout wins. But the competition was so crappy, it's hard to read anything into it. The early takeaway seems to be: Defense and line improved form where they were at this point last year; QB could be an issue; kicking game DEFINITELY an issue; safety spot is a question mark, still, since neither team was good enough to attack the safeties.; running game has three legit backs; passing game has only one legit WR.

Do you mean Bama-A&M? Already plenty of talk about that on the college FB thread.

Yeah, it's hard to read too much into Wisconsin's start, even though they're a pretty good team. Nothing stops a nice start to the season faster than ill-advised trips to the west coast.
