I know they didn't in 2007 and 2009... I can't find the spreadsheets from 2008, but I would think it safe

One more piece of Wazzu trivia (didn't use it in the poll story): Which team from a BCS conference opened its season with two road games?

That's right, the Cougars. They're the only one.

(And yes, I realize Alabama and Syracuse had a "neutral site" game, then a road game, but I have a feeling quite a few of their fans were in those stadiums)

Re: 2013 SJ College Football Poll: LAST CALL for Week 3 votes!

    I’m just second-hand news

    By I SHOULD COCO
    Dead tree society

Is it too early to award Alabama a place in the final BCS Big Enchilada Bowl, and to speculate who their opponent will be? Of course it is. But that’s never stopped us before, so just lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff:

    TITLE GAME PARTICIPANTS (and odds)

Alabam bam, bam-ba-bam, Bam-bam, bam-ba-bam, Bam-bam, bam-ba-bam, Bam-bam-ba-bam-bam: In the biggest and (perhaps) best game of the season thus far, the Crimson Tide showed another way they can win: outscore teams with the passing offense. Texas A&M dared AJ McCarron to beat them with his arm, and he obliged, with a career-high 334 yards and four TDs. Alabama’s already showed it can play smash-mouth football, and while the defense has played better than it did on Saturday, consider the opposition: one of the best offensive teams in the nation. Barring an improbable upset, only LSU could derail the Tuscaloosa crazy train at this point. Odds: Even.

Oregon: Well, if there’s an offense that can match or even surpass the crazy world of Johnny Manziel, it’s the Ducks. Marcus Mariota had a damn fine Saturday himself, and they supposedly have an improved defense in Eugene. It was tough to tell as Tennessee imploded this weekend, so the true tests await in Pac-12 competition, beginning with an Oct. 12 game against UW in Seattle. Odds: 2-to-1.

Stanford: While the rest of the college football world rocks out to Jango and Pandora, the Cardinal keeps cruising along in their vintage automobile, tuning in to KGO and catching the Paul Harvey show. Defense, a conservative offense and physical football led Stanford to victory in Oregon last season, and the Ducks have to come to The Farm this year. Working against the Cardinal is a tough schedule that includes (arguably) the three best teams in the Pac-12 South and a season-ending tilt with Notre Dame. Odds: 5-to-1

Clemson: The Tigers won perhaps the second-best game of the young season, pulling away from Georgia in a season-opening home win. A home game versus Florida State and season finale at South Carolina SHOULD be the final two obstacles to an undefeated season and ACC title game berth. But this is Clemson we’re talking about. Perhaps teams like N.C. State, Maryland and Virginia are the real tests for Tajh Boyd and company. Odds: 10-to-1

Georgia: Oh, how the Insane Dawg Posse would love to finally upend Alabama in the SEC title game this season. And the Bulldogs might get the chance. However, they still have to overcome LSU (in two weeks) and Florida to get there. Should Clemson win out, it would be tough to pick the Bulldogs over the Tigers for a shot at all the Tostitos ... unless they played each other. Odds: 15-to-1.

LSU: The Tigers drew two tough teams (Florida and Georgia) from the SEC East in this year’s schedule, and of course have a tough road in their own division. They also have Les “Oklahoma State Hospitality” Miles at the helm. Enough said. Odds: 20-to-1.

Texas A&M: Don’t laugh; it was only two years ago the SEC West runner-up had another chance in the BCS title game, and we know how that turned out. The Aggies defense looked awful against Alabama, but so would most teams, and if Johnny Football can stay eligible/upright as he scrambles through the SEC West schedule, this team could win out — with a Nov. 23 date in Death Valley the biggest obstacle. Odds: 50-to-1.

The Field: You’ll notice a few teams — and conferences — are missing from this list. Everything you need to know about the Big 10 happened in the last 18 seconds of Wisconsin’s loss at Tempe. A national champ from the land of Twinkee people Ain’t. Gonna. Happen. The Big 12 has plenty of good teams, but the quality depth in the conference makes the chances of anyone emerging unscathed from their round-robin schedule as flimsy as the Texas run defense. Florida State needs to win at Clemson and at Florida, beat Miami, and not slip up against the rest of the ACC. And while UCLA looked good against the Nebraska defense, they face the three best teams in the Pac-12 North. Odds: 100-to-1.

So there you have it. And for anyone who doubts me:

    “I’m a pimp, you can check my stats; I roll in a Fleetwood, that’s how I Mac ...” :D

    *********************
Judging by this week’s SportsJournalists.com poll, quite a few people disagree with the ramblings above. Because the top-rated team hasn’t been in doubt all season, I went ahead and tallied second-place votes. Here’s the breakdown:

    Ohio St. 10, Oregon 10, Clemson 3, Alabama 2, Georgia 1, Stanford 1.

The Ducks picked up quite a few No. 2 votes after dismantling Tennessee this weekend, and that's how they squeaked ahead of the Buckeyes in the following poll. Check out the rest of the rankings below:

Florida State may have a better shot at the title game than Ohio State.

And show yourself, Clemson voter. At least Songbird takes pride in his insolence and ignorance.
