So, to be clear, the team with nine new defensive starters is basically the same as the team with five?

Out of habit, I'm sure most voters (voters in real polls and voters in this thing) dropped Texas A&M in their rankings. Staples makes a good point in his rankings column this week. It's kinda dumb to drop them in the rankings, isn't it?

One team has 13, one has 12. You can split hairs all you want.

Georgia began the season ranked No. 6. Clemson began No. 8.

You're just not being objective if 8 beats 6 and you keep 6 ranked ahead of 8.

USA Today: — Defense: It's a bit misleading to say the Bulldogs returns only two starters on defense, since five defenders have started at least five career games ...

I actually moved Clemson up. A three-point road loss on opening weekend isn't going to talk me out of Georgia, though. I don't understand why this bothers you so much, Songbird? Are you a Clemson fan?

Are you not aware that our rankings are not part of the Bowl Championship Series formula?

    I am aware of that.

    That being said ...

It doesn't bother me but when you say I'm insolent about having Ohio State over Alabama, but when you do so I'll point out how peculiar it is that you vote Georgia higher than Clemson -- and now Wisconsin higher than Arizona State -- despite the head-to-head losses. Differing opinions is all it is.

Clemson fan? No. But I do think the Tigers should have gone undefeated and won it all with Whitehurst and Spiller and those WRs. Just another case of Clemson Being Clemson.

Arizona State beat Wisconsin (in Tempe) because of a bad call. You don't consider that while voting?

No, I don't consider the bad call. There are tons of bad calls every week in several games.

What I consider is that Arizona State put up 32 on a defense that had given up 0 in 8 quarters.

Granted, the 2 shutouts were against crap competition. Arizona State played crap in its opener.

But here we had teams that were pretty much even. It was 32-30 Arizona State until the call you think should have given Wisconsin a chance to win 33-32, but the reality is Arizona State won 32-30.

Would your thinking be different had the outcome been 32-30 in Madison -- "bad call" included?

Or, what if the "bad call" doesn't take place and Wisky lines up for the FG and misses?

Yes, entirely. Losing at home is a big deal. I dropped Alabama last year for a home loss. Losing by two on a bad call on the road in the third week of the season to a non-conference opponent is simply not a big deal. Wisconsin is better than Arizona State, and that will bear itself out.

    • Texas A&M only dropped one spot in our poll (from 9 to 10). Most voters still had the Aggies in the top 10, and rightly so. As I wrote, it's possible they could win out and work their way back into the BCS championship game picture.

    • Tough to penalize Arizona State for the incompetence of officials. There's no guarantee the kick would have been made. And as Songbird noted, there's bad calls that decide important games almost every year ... a couple games at Notre Dame in the past decade come to mind.

That being said, yeah, Wisconsin got screwed. Because of that, a few voters left Wisconsin ahead of ASU. The Sun Devils probably run out of luck beginning this weekend, but if they stay undefeated, that lucky Bucky win might loom larger.

Texas A&M is much better than I gave them credit for. I may have dropped them one slot at the most, can't remember.

TAMU would scrub both Arizona State and Wisconsin.

I think I dropped A&M three spots this week, from No. 8 to 11. Don't care how good your quarterback plays, you let Bama drop 49 on you (OK, 42 plus a pick-6) there has to be a penalty.

And A&M's defense has been soft all year. Rice put up 31 on them and Sam scored 28. Unless they find a way to fix that I can see Ole Miss and LSU lighting up the scoreboard on the Ags in a big way.
