Lane Kiffin: Paranoid android

Hey Lane. I hear Walmart is hiring. It's almost time for the big box stores to gear up for the holiday rush, and you're unemployed.

It's a perfect fit, because obviously you aren't as good as you thought you were at coaching college football. Maybe you'd be better at stocking shelves.

And now you know how Tennessee fans felt when, after only a year on Rocky Top, you bolted for sunny Southern California and the mighty Trojans. You had high hopes of making Southern Cal a formidable team again, only to watch it all crumble away in the desert.

Watching you on the sidelines of that 62-41 loss to Arizona State was hilarious, but no one could tell if you were happy, sad, upset or whatever because your expression never changed. Even as your team clawed its way back into the game, it didn't change.

Your time at Southern Cal won't be marked by championships and Heisman trophies, but by mediocrity. Sure, you had the Trojans ranked No. 1 to start last season, but things unraveled quickly and you fell completely out of the Top 25 by season's end. And it was capped in the most perfect way — a bowl loss.

In a way, you're a lot like Charlie Weis: you were surrounded by great coaches and great athletes, and always found a way to take credit for their successes.

Things ended so badly for you, your now-former athletic director decided to fire you before the game was even over — and then didn't give you a ride back to campus after your flight landed in LA. That's cold, but oh so hilarious.

Now, the question is who will be dumb enough to hire you as a head coach? Your record speaks for itself, Lane. You can't coach. But someone out there will be desperate and they'll throw you a line.

But don't be surprised to find yourself calling Walmart again in a few years.

Hearty thanks go out to KY Sportswriter, who pinch-hit for me on this week's story. Walmart Sales Associate has a nice ring to it for Kiffin.

Three other things I didn't want to get mixed in with his story:

1. No, I did not cast a vote for Iowa ... although three others did. Even as a University of Iowa grad/fanboi, I can't see ranking them ahead of NIU since the Huskies beat the Hawkeyes in week 1.

2. We've got four teams receiving No. 1 votes this week. Can't find fault with that; while the SEC champ will likely be the favorite in the last BCS Big Enchilada Bowl, thus far there are several worthy challengers.

3. For whatever reason, voter "turnout" has been lacking this season. A few voters have PM'd me and asked to drop out because they're too busy/unable to follow the games and cast ballots. That's cool and I totally understand it.

I know that things pop up from week to week and a ballot or two is missed; again, no problems here. We're doing it for fun.

But for the handful of others who have stopped voting for unknown reasons, just let me know what's up. It makes tallying votes a lot easier, and if I know for sure you're out, I may call on a couple other voters to step in.
