Most people reading this remember 1995 pretty well.

NBC dominated the TV ratings, led by “Seinfeld,” “Friends” and the rest of its Thursday night lineup. The Smashing Pumpkins ruled the radio and concert circuit behind Billy Corgan’s ego and his double-CD opus, “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.” And deep in the heart of Texas, Kilff Kingsbury was the spittin’ image of the “Dazed and Confused” hero Randall “Pink” Floyd, a prep phenom zinging footballs across the plains.

Kingsbury didn’t know it yet, but two other events of great significance to his current job occurred in 1995: the births of Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb.

In 2013, these two freshman QBs — one a relatively unheralded walk-on — have led Kingsbury’s Texas Tech Red Raiders to an unbeaten record and a statement-making opportunity at Oklahoma this weekend.

But let’s back up a bit and consider what an amazing story the Red Raiders have been in 2013.

It starts with Kingsbury, who set all kinds of passing records himself at Texas Tech under pass-happy coaches Spike Dykes and Mike Leach. After injuries derailed his NFL opportunities, he bounced around in Europe and Canada before beginning his coaching career at age 29 at University of Houston.

After a handful of seasons tutoring gunslingers Case Keenum and Johnny Mazniel, the brass in Lubbock took a chance and named Kingsbury the Red Raiders’ head coach at 33. He’s still unbeaten as a head coach, despite injuries forcing him to install walk-on freshman Mayfield as his opening-game starter.

Since then, Mayfield injured his knee and fellow freshman Webb has stepped in, leading Texas Tech to arguably its best victory of the season, a 37-27 win at West Virginia on Saturday.

There’s no doubt that the “air raid” ways of past Red Raiders teams continue under Kingsbury. Texas Tech’s 416 yards per game is second in the nation, with BOTH freshman quarterbacks throwing for more than 1,400 yards already this season. A quartet of receivers (Jace Amaro, Bradley Marquez, Eric Ward and Jakeem Grant) are the beneficiaries of all these passes; all four have 30 or more catches with an average of 12 yards or better per reception.

As winless teams drop like frost-ravaged sunflowers, the spotlight on the Red Raiders keeps getting bigger. Especially the next two weekends, as Texas Tech faces the Big 12’s preseason favorites, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Win those, and a BCS bowl berth showdown with Baylor looms in Lubbock on Nov. 16.

The Red Raiders fall below fellow “surprise” unbeatens like Missouri, Miami and Baylor in large part because they “haven’t played anybody” yet. They’ll get that chance in upcoming weeks, and we’ll see if young coach Kingsbury and his even younger offensive stars can rise to the occasion.

So Alabama would be playing with itself every week?

It's the kind of fear Nick Saban likes.
