Bowl season: Frosting on the beater

    By I SHOULD COCO
    Pocket full of Poises

While most college football fans have their eyes on only one postseason game — the final BCS Big Enchilada Bowl, Jan. 6 in Pasadena — it’s important to remember the other 34 bowl games are coming up, too.

Now, why would anyone get excited about qualifying for, say, the New Mexico Bowl or Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl? With apologies to “the Answer,” here’s the answer: Money and practice.

Practice? We’re talking about practice, man! As in, roughly 15 extra practices between the end of the season and the bowl game.

For many of these teams qualifying for lesser bowl games (I’m looking at you, Iowa Hawkeyes) these practices are more valuable than the bowl payout money, which will be burned through quickly by trips to the game for band members, cheerleaders and administrators’ families.

With that in mind, here’s a BCS conference look at bowl teams and tie-ins. A couple of these leagues look to be a little short of mediocre teams to fill their bowl slots.

“Don’t Call Us the Big East” American Athletic Conference: Six tie-ins (includes 1 berth in BCS bowl game) — Talk about a top-heavy league. Central Florida (4-0), Louisville (4-1), Cincinnati (4-1) and Houston (4-1) will battle it out for the conference title and — maybe — a berth in whatever unlucky BCS bowl gets the league champion. (Fresno State or Northern Illinois could steal the BCS slot). These four teams also could be the only ones to reach the magic number of six wins, although Rutgers (5-3) still has winless UConn on its schedule.

Atlantic Coast Conference: Eight tie-ins (1) — Shouldn’t be any trouble finding eight teams here, especially with Pittsburgh beating Notre Dame on Saturday night for its fifth win. The real question is who among a quartet of two-loss Coastal Division teams will end up facing Florida State in the ACC championship game. That division winner will become very popular in Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 7. Speaking of the Buckeyes ...

Big 10 Conference: Eight tie-ins (1) — Unless Northwestern or Indiana has a big upset in them, the Big 10 will come up short on bowl qualifiers yet again. Especially if Wisconsin sneaks into an at-large BCS bowl berth. Minnesota fans, you will not be stuck traveling to Detroit for a bowl game. (But just a friendly reminder ... despite the Gophers’ resurgence this year, WE’VE GOT FLOYD!)

Big 12 Conference: Seven tie-ins (1) — With only 10 teams, it’s pretty ambitious to think you can get seven of them bowl-eligible ... especially when that group includes Kansas and Iowa State. But since those two teams are left on West Virginia’s schedule, it’s possible the Mountaineers (4-6) can qualify for a postseason game. Kansas State (5-4) gets three cracks at a sixth win, including a Nov. 30 game in Lawrence.

Pac-12 Conference: Seven tie-ins (1) — There are already eight bowl-eligible teams here, and two 4-5 squads (Utah and Washington State) with a puncher’s chance. Maybe Coug fans will get to “wave the flag” in Detroit this year if their team can recover from its recent drubbings and scratch out two wins against Arizona, Utah and/or Washington.

Southeastern Conference: Ten tie-ins (1) — First of all, we know that there will be two SEC teams in BCS bowl games ... it’s just a matter of whether or not they’re facing each other in the Big Enchilada Bowl. While highly unlikely this season, you can never rule it out as long as Mike Slive is at the controls of the BCS supercomputers. Anyway, only Arkansas and Kentucky are assured of staying home at this point, although Tennessee could be joining them soon after its matchup with Auburn this weekend. And thanks to Vanderbilt’s first win at Florida since 1945, the Gators are in danger of missing the bowl season. Have fun watching the Seminoles play for a national title, Florida fans!

    ************************************

And now for the Week 11 poll. The interesting part is Nos. 15-20, where Fresno State sits ahead of Central Florida, and Louisville keeps on winning and keeps on losing ground. The Cardinals are now No. 20.

LSU remains high in the poll, tied at No. 17, while a fellow three-loss SEC team that beat them, Georgia, is at No. 25.

I just count 'em, folks. Here's this week's poll:

    NOTE FROM THE TABULATOR:

My home computer has apparently given up the ghost (the hard drive isn't "there" anymore, so there's nowhere to re-install the OS).

In other words, the poll might not be tabulated/posted on time this week.

But voters, STILL SEND IN YOUR WEEK 12 BALLOTS and I'll find a way to count them at some point Monday (might be really late, like after my desk shift).

    Thanks for understanding.

Update: Just got to work and was grateful to see most of the votes are in. Got about half counted last night, will do the rest after deadline and post a Week 12 poll.

Nobody likes reading those rambling poll stories, anyway ... ;)

Hopefully next week we'll be back to normal; looks like the home computer will be repaired by Wednesday or Thursday.

    See y'all later.

It's too late to say anything profound ... 11:59 p.m. PST as I type this. I'll be happy to have my own rig back for next week and not this crappy NeoOffice spreadsheet on my newsroom computer.

Anyway, not much changed this week, other than Stanford slipping down to No. 10. Wisconsin moved up a couple spots, but the Badgers could be tested this weekend at No. 24 Minnesota. Never thought I'd be typing that!

And a shout out to Duke, the basketball school we love to hate. The Blue Devils basically ran over Miami on Saturday to earn a place in our poll for (I'm pretty sure, slappy) the first time ever.

Maybe they'll have a shot to knock off Florida State in the ACC championship game. Lord knows the hapless Idaho Vandals don't this weekend.

OK, enough rambling. Here's this week's poll. Thanks for voting, keep on rockin' in the free world ...
