GMs fall in love with the idea of "discovering" a guy. It also doesn't hurt that some younger coach that hasn't been through the process before won't notice when the GM screws up or is lacking in other areas. There is also the prejudice against older coaches thinking that well, if nobody else has given this guy a job before, there must be something wrong with him. Hell, give me a coach who has been around and can get good coaches who players respect and want to play for.

GMs want to be able to say, "Yeah, nobody else has heard of this guy, but I'm going to bring him here and he's going to win Super Bowls."

It worked for the Ravens, Steelers and Packers. Andy Reid had never even been a coordinator when the Eagles hired him.

Coughlin and Belichick were re-treads who had been fired from previous jobs before they won Super Bowls.

The notion that multiple teams passed on Bruce Arians right after he won coach of the year as an interim coach tells you how much teams overthink coaching hires.

Mike Shanahan has interviewed for four openings. I know the popular feeling on here after he was fired by the Redskins that he would never coach again.

So several teams are interested in the Shanahans as a package deal?

I think it might happen. A lot of people seem to think Ryan is going to be hired by the Falcons soon and then the other teams will start making hires. I don't know that I would be surprised if Mike Shanahan doesn't get hired, but since a lot of the teams seem to want an experienced head coach, I would not be surprised if they wind up in Chicago, SF, Oakland or possibly Buffalo.

Mike Shanahan seems to have interviews lined up with every team in the NFL; whether they already have a head coach or not. He's getting one of them.

Agreed - He can walk into a meeting wearing 2 Super Bowl rings. If gives him some cred that the
    others might not have.

I think the issues RG3 had this past season may have made people realize that Shanahan wasn't the problem in Washington.

As a 49ers fan, I'm intrigued by Shanahan.

This may sound insane, but I like that he let RG3 run, even though it resulted in him getting hurt. I'd rather see him do that with Kaepernick and maybe you get 3-4 productive years out of him, which would be better than watching him play the way he did this past season again.

I don't know that Shanahan is the answer in SF or anywhere else, but how often does replacing a huge personality with a first-time head coach work out? Well, it did in Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but I tend to doubt there's another John Harbaugh or Mike Tomlin in this group of assistants that are up for these jobs.

I think teams wanting someone with head coaching experience shows that they've not been blown away by any of the assistants who have interviewed.

Anyone think Chicago would have interest in Dave Toub?

I heard his name in the early reports, but nothing lately. Getting rid of him was a huge mistake. His special teams were an underrated part of the Bears' early success under Lovie.

GM News....Michael Robinson says Scot McWhatever is the new Skins GM. We'll apparently find out exactly what that means later this week.
