Marquette spent huge money to keep Crean as long as it did.

There's the one thing that makes Marquette different from all the other jobs Smart's turned down. I have no idea that's a big factor for him or not, but if he hasn't been interested NC State or Maryland or Virginia Tech I can't see why he'd suddenly want the Wake job.

That said, Wake could be a decent job for somebody. I think Archie Miller could do well there, but who knows if he's interested in coaching one of his alma mater's rivals.

I wouldn't take either one unless I was a really established coach with good ties to Nike or Adidas.

Buzz had a couple losing seasons coming his way. Might as well do that at Va Tech and call it rebuilding.

There's nothing Marquette's got to offer Smart doesn't have right now. Wake is hardly an ideal job either. That was my poorly expressed point. These so-called bigger name schools aren't really better jobs anymore.

Wake has the ACC, which automatically makes it a better job than Marquette and the Not-So-Big-Anymore East.

BTW, those asking about Gregg Marshall, he's a Carolinas/ACC-area guy who would absolutely love to get an ACC job.

Marshall would seem to be a pretty good fit for Wake.

Wake should do everything they could do to get Marshall or Smart - that would put them back on the map quickly.

If Marquette doesn't hire Ben Howland they are idiots with unrealistic view of themselves. He will win that league almost every year and get them to the tournament almost every year.

Boston College should dump a boat load of cash on Tommy Amaker and convince him BC is a better job than Harvard.

Alas, Zag, BC is not a better job than Harvard, money notwithstanding. BC hoops is the third most important sport on campus, let alone in the Boston sports community at large where it's about 17th. True story. One time during the Skinner years, the basketball team wasn't allowed to use the Conte Forum court for a pretournament practice session. The hockey team had it. The women's hockey team.

Wake is arguably a better job than Marquette, but the ACC isn't so much better than the Big East as a basketball conference that every job in the league is better. Think Jay Wright would leave Villanova for Clemson? Would anybody choose Virginia Tech over Georgetown?

You're right, of course, but Wake isn't VT or Clemson. It's a Tobacco Road team with tons of history. It will always be, at worst, the 4th-most important school to the ACC brass.

Marshall and Wake does seem like a good fit. It's right between Roanoke and Upstate South Carolina, which are "home" to him. His style could work at Wake too. He could play up the chip-on-the-shoulder, play-angry, nobody-respects-us, we're-just as-good-as (Kansas, Kansas State, UNC, Duke or insert whatever more prominent in-state school applies) angle just as well at Wake Forest as he has at Wichita State.

True, but it's also often the fourth-most important school in a 100-mile stretch of highway. I'd say Wake is going to be a better job to some people, but others would see Marquette as the better opportunity.
