Just like Paul Hewitt -- nice enough guy, classy, smart, runs a clean program, represents the university well ... but just a terrible coach.

So who's the next former Dookie to get a spot next to K on the bench? My money is on Jon Scheyer.

He must have seen that quote about Coach K expecting to be at Duke for another five years.

I like the hire. He's known for being a great recruiter, but then again, he was recruiting to Duke.

Scheyer, as you already know, is there. He'll get the spot since he's had some OJT already.

Another question: Who will move into Scheyer's spot? Tyler Thornton is a possibility.

    D'oh! Somehow I missed that.

It won't be Thornton, though. He has to still have eligibility left. He's only been playing there for 30 years.

That was my first thought when I heard Montgomery retired.

I wouldn't be surprised if he brought Carawell back instead of promoting Scheyer. Carawell did the administrative stuff for years waiting for a spot on the bench that never materialized with Collins & Wojo both hanging on for K's retirement.

He's done a good job at Tulsa, though everyone seems to ...

My Wojo story: He had been an assistant at Duke for a couple years and I had written a profile on a player who Duke had heavily recruited but chose a different school.

I had two references to Wojo in the story, one where the player's high school coach was talking about how the player had gone from being under the radar one season to the next season having a coaches from all the top schools there, and listed a bunch of them, including Wojo, who was the only assistant listed among several big-name head coaches.

The Duke message board exploded and interpreted it as "Duke didn't care enough about this player to send Coach K" which was such a colossal leap and there wasn't anything negative about the quote.

The Duke fans were emailing me and I read one of the links where one guy said, "I called Wojo this morning and expressed my disgust and he said the writer was completely wrong and was going to call him to let him have it.

About 30 minutes later my phone rang.

"Let me tell you something about that kid. Under no circumstances were we disrespecting him by not sending Coach to his first game. He was at several of his games..." He rants to me for a couple minutes...

I said, "Did you read the article?"

"No, but a booster told me about it this morning."

I said, "I have the article right here, let me read you the two times you're mentioned."

I read him the portion where all the coaches are listed and I hear, "Hmmm..."

I read the second reference to him which is the player talking about how hard it was to tell coaches he was going elsewhere and he listed Coach K and Wojo among them.

He said, "Nobody told me about that."

He apologizes and curses the booster and fan boards and we then had a 20-minute conversation about recruiting in general. He gives me his cell number and I tell him I'm going to be in Durham a few months later and he tells me to come by.

When I was there, I called him and left him a voice mail. He calls me 10 minutes later and tells me to come by the offices. This is when Duke was installing fingerprint scanners all over the offices and he gave me a quick tour.

He was a really cool guy. I hope he does well at Marquette.
