Lots of people in my neck of the woods hoping there's another opening this week.

Would be shaka ... I mean shocked. If he turned down UCLA, Maryland, N.C. State and Illinois, AND he has one of the top freshman classes in the country coming in, then why would he skip town for a team that *might* be a half-step higher on the ladder?

Apparently they're talking to Ben Howland, which would be a pretty good fit for them: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/goldeneagles/marquette-has-contacted-ben-howland-about-coaching-position-b99230955z1-251743241.html

Marquette is a great launching pad for coaches. I'm surprised Williams jumped to VT, its a coach killer. Washington State might be a better job. At least go somewhere where coaches succeed enough where they jobs after Blacksburg. The last one who was good enough to land a job elsewhere was Don DeVoe in the mid-70s who left for Wyoming.

Marquette would be an interesting landing spot for Shaka. I kept hearing it was between Howland and the UWGB coach, who is a former Marquette player and assistant.

Buzz Williams leaving for Virginia Tech makes no sense given the jobs Williams has turned down in the last couple years (Arkansas, Oklahoma...) if the situation there is bad enough or there are enough question marks about the future to run Williams off, what makes them think they can lure Shaka there?

Allen Bristow won't be coming through the door anytime soon.

I saw one thing linking Shaka to the USF opening, but why the hell would he leave VCU for that job? Marquette would make a lot more sense than USF, unless he wants to be in Florida so he can pounce on that job as soon as Donovan leaves, which may never happen.

Does Greggggg Marshall go for the Marquette job?

I know he's compensated well at Wichita, but I can't imagine him ever reaching the heights of last year and this year again there. He'd probably be good to win the crappy Valley most years, but Final Four trips and undefeated seasons probably aren't going to happen again for him at WSU. If he's ever going to jump and get into a big-time conference, this would seem to be the time.

To some extent, one would think that someone like Marshall, or the guy at Dayton (who has also been mentioned for the Marquette opening) would realize that they need to take advantage of historic seasons by their school's standards and jump for the big money. But I think they've seen enough Barry Colliers and Stan Heaths to know they need to wait for the right situation.

Marquette is a pretty damn good program.

Someone wondered who the "hot coach of the moment" would be, and more than likely it's Archie Miller.

ESPN says Wake Forest and Marquette are both pursuing Smart. I would think Marquette would be the better of the two jobs...

Why would Marquette be better than Wake?

Wake's missed the tournament 7 of the last 9 seasons. I know they had a nice stretch there from Duncan's early days there through Chris Paul's time there, but they haven't done much since.

Marquette is almost always in the tournament. They've made it eight of the last nine seasons.

It's not significantly better, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd take Marquette.

Marquette also spends like crazy on hoops. And there's no football to compete with, like at Wake. (Call me crazy, but these two items may be related.)

I'd rather be in Milwaukee than Winston, but that's personal preference. Shaka is a Wisconsin boy.
