Maddox sucked. The Steelers needed a QB ASAP pretty much since Terry blew out his arm.

I don't think we'll ever see another Joe Montana/Steve Young situation like the 49ers had for a few years in the late 80s. The salary cap makes that just about impossible. Hell, the Colts couldn't even make Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck work.

About the closest thing might be a Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers or Alex Smith/Colin Kaepernick, where the young guy is on his rookie deal and doesn't cost so much. Even then, teams can't seem to find a way to make it work.

Best case scenario I suppose is you have a good team that allows you the luxury of drafting for the future instead of urgent need.

It actually should be done more often with the rookie salary cap. Good backup quarterbacks don't come cheap.

The Packers situation was different because it was a rare situation where the franchise had no idea how much longer Favre was going to play.

    Free agency probably helps, too.

There is no way on earth the Cowboys take a QB in the first round, with the possible exception of Manziel. And I'm not sure they would take Manziel if he was available there, either.

They are married to Romo for the foreseeable future.

True. The reason why the Texans were able to trade Schaub is because they paid the bulk of his salary the first year. I'd have to look it up, but I think he has a pretty low cap number for the next two years with the Raiders.

I think it's the exact opposite case with Romo, especially since they just re-structured things to give them cap room. If anything, it will make him untradeable.

The Cowboys have too many holes to fill to waste a pick on a QB who won't be better than Romo in 2014.

People said the same thing about the Packers when they passed on Logan Mankins to take Aaron Rodgers.

I don't remember "people" saying that at all, but that would have been a really dumb thing for "people" to say since the Packers were coming off four straight playoff seasons and 44 combined wins when they drafted Rodgers.

Except that none of the quarterbacks in this draft come close to being the type of pro prospect Rodgers was coming out of Cal.

They had also just lost both guards to free agency. It did come down to Mankins or Rodgers and supposedly a couple assistants were really pissed about taking Rodgers. But that was with a new GM and a coach who probably had to win to keep his job, so it's easy to understand why he would want a player who could help him immediately over a player who wasn't likely to be used for a couple years.

I agree criticizing the pick was dumb. If a guy like that falls into your lap, you draft him.

I also agree nobody in this draft is as good as Rodgers.

Prisco went from taking Manziel out of his first round last week to No. 5 this week.
