It wasn't the NFL, but it wasn't the XFL either... I remember watching Bobby Hebert and Anthony Carter that last year in Oakland.

There were four future Hall of Famers as players and two as coaches, and that's not counting people like Herschel Walker, Mike Rozier, Doug Flutie, Marcus Dupree, Brian Sipe, Doug Williams, Joe Cribbs... Big name coaches too...

It wasn't like the league was filled with players who couldn't hang on NFL rosters, which has been the case with every league since.

Exactly. The depth was the big difference from the NFL. The league had elite players, but not enough of them.

That's actually a pretty good trivia question. Which four former USFL players are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Three were very big names. The fourth would be a tough one for the casual football fan to remember.

Regarding Herschel Walker's point, I don't have an issue with considering USFL production as part of the resume, but it is a very small part. Not nearly enough to get him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Years ago, a NFL writer who is on the HOF committee said he thought Flutie had a decent chance to make it into Canton based on what he did in Canada.

A few weeks later, the writer repeated his theory at the owner's meetings and was promptly told by a national writer what a fucking idiot he is for even mentioning Flutie and HOF in the same sentence.
