I'm envisioning the late 1990s Packers.

I'm trying to figure out who is leaking what in the Harbaugh thing. Doesn't seem like management would want people to think that they think they would be fine without Harbaugh (even though it sounds like that's what they think). And it doesn't seem like Harbaugh is looking to get out. He's getting $5 mil a year. Figure he'll get $6 mil a year, plus some more input on the roster.

Sounds like Jerry-Jimmy for the 21st Century.

Know what's worse than that? Jerry without Jimmy.

This is such an odd time of year to have something like this go down (though I admit I don' t remember when the Jimmy-Jerry stuff all happened).

It makes me think Harbaugh is such an over-the-top egomaniacal asshat, that management doesn't care if everyone knows they are OK with him leaving. If the reports are true that he wants $8 million a year and more input as a roster, to be treated like a coach who has won a Super Bowl, in other words, and his on-field behavior is any indicator, I can only imagine what he's like behind closed doors in dealing with the GM and the team president.

Neither side is in an enviable position. Harbaugh stepped into a pretty good spot, roster-wise, and has done a great job. But if he leaves the Niners and takes over in Cleveland/Miami/Oakland, the "genius" label on him won't last long. And has been mentioned, if the Niners let him walk and go back to another Singletary/Nolan hire, they are going to get ridden out of town.

In any case, with all these stories surfacing about how horrible the relationship is, and nothing being done to refute that, tells me there's a lot of truth to these reports. Should be very interesting watching for the next 11 months or so.

I suspect there are a lot of egos involved. Coach thinks he's the greatest thing since Lombardi. GM gets tired of coach's ego and wants a little credit, too. Figures he might get it if the coach goes away.

Maybe they leaked the Harbaugh to Browns nonsense as sort of a message "We're more than Jim Harbaugh and if he'd rather coach in a place like Cleveland, fond farewell and we'll be fine without him."

The popular rumor is that the leak came from Lombardi.

The difference, of course, being that Jimmy Johnson had won two Super Bowls.

A Lombardi anyway. Mike Lombardi's son, Mick, works for the 49ers.

Mike Lombardi was the infamous "fox in the henhouse" during Art Shell's comeback year with the Raiders.

If Vegas posted odds, he'd be the 1-to-10 favorite here.

I'm guessing, given Mike Lombardi's relationship with the media, that it came from him.
