It's a pretty easy call, no? Mike Lombardi was working for the Browns in a high-level position and, you would think, knew all about this deal. The Browns then fired him. Lombardi formerly worked in the media and presumably still has tons of contacts therein. Why wouldn't he "leak" this story? Hell, I'm surprised he didn't go on the record with it.

This story was remained a secret for over a month. What's happened since then? Lombardi's been fired and what better way to doom Pettine to fail then to leak something like this. It probably hurts the Niners more than the Browns, but only because the Niners actually have something to lose.

A friend who covers the team thinks Harbaugh quitting before the draft is a real possibility.

If so, he could slide into any network's broadcast booth or studio and sit in the catbird seat there until the post-2014 round of firings. But I doubt that'll happen. In the end, ownership will paper over the problems with more paper money.

He doesn't have a ring, only coaches with rings get those positions.

You mean like Herm Edwards and Eric Mangini?

It's happened before. This thing seems to be reaching critical mass.
Who did get the scoop on this story?

Just repeating what Exmediahack tells us.

I have no faith in ownership being able to fix this. I don't think he'll quit, but I think this will be his last year in SF.

If Eddie D was still the owner, I would agree...

So what's Harbaugh's beef, other than money and maybe someone else getting credit? Hell, if he doesn't like life there, he should step aside.

Has something like that ever happened before?

I would think that would almost make him unhireable.
