I'm not sure they were given enough time to show compentence or incompetence. they have a shitload of picks and have some very nice pieces.

The coaching searches were not handled well, but what personal moves did they make that leads one to believe they are incompetant? They inherited a mess.

It may very well be the right move but I think meddlesome ownership that listens to it's fan base is a lot more damaging to a franchise in the long run.

I totally agree that they didn't get enough time to know for sure (just like the coach they fired!).

But the knocks on them are:
They got nothing out of their draft.
Their FA signings ranged from middling to disaster.
    Kruger wasn't a good signing.
    Bess was a train-wreck of a signing.

ADD: Essentially that there was no faith these guys could evaluate talent - playing talent or coaching talent.

With Bess, wasn't it common knowledge within the league (including via a police report) what was happening in Miami? There is no way they should have made that move.

Apparently it wasn't common knowledge within the Cleveland front office. And they said they brought him in to be a veteran role model for the young WRs. No wonder Gordon got suspended!

Lombardi has worked in the front offices of the two most maladjusted franchises in the league.
    Banner was a furniture salesman.

Has there been anyone there since the team came back, who was liked, even for a short period of time? It seemed like Butch Davis was OK there for a couple years...

Cleveland fans are definitely haters. They turn on people REALLY quickly. Right now, I feel like Chris Palmer is the most fondly recalled ex-coach.

Palmer, Davis and Crennel came from good coaching trees.
The hires just haven't worked out.
Compare the Browns' hires with the Raiders' and Cleveland comes out on top.

I'm not sure the Browns organization is to blame for the failure of some of the coaches, but the organization is definitely to blame for the current situation.

I almost feel like they should fire Pettine today, hire McDaniels and there will at least be a small chance that it could work out. There is a coach there who the owner didn't want. Unless he shocks the world next season, he's gone after one year.

It's just been a snowball effect.
There is constant turnover because there has not been a shred of continuing success from year to year.
I am not convinced McDaniels is any team's Moses- people are forgetting what a fucking disaster he was in Denver.
He basically laid waste to an organization in record time.
Manning has covered up a lot of the still-existing deficit areas, as he did in Indianapolis.

Oh, I agree about McDaniels... I'm surprised any team wants him at this point...

Although, I'm not sure if McDaniels was the guy who Haslam wanted or if he was the guy who Lombardi wanted...
