Instead of poking fun at it, they could even explain it as the Authority rewarding them for their help by not making him defend the title,or something like that.

Regardless of what Punk's motivations are, I suspect the result is that he takes a *much* needed break for both his body and his mind, then eventually comes back to much fanfare.

I don't blame Punk. Other than a short couple of months off last year, he has taken zero time off since he left ROH. He worked commentary when he had a hip injury in early 2011 (prior to New Nexxus and the Pipebomb Promo) and he still showed up for TV when his knee was scoped in December 2012. The man needs a break.

The sad thing is, have you ever seen the WWE completely waste a guy's time like they have Punk? Aside from that MITB run, he's gotten nothing but awful crap for all but about a month and a half (last year's run with Taker) since that title match.
For all the injuries he's incurred, you'd think they'd at least have had something memorable to show for it. Nope.

"Besides the longest title run since 1980s Hogan" is kind of a big "besides."

Meh. Hard for me to get excited about that title run when it was never given the respect it should have been until the final few weeks, all when they were building it up just to tear it down in favor of the Rock winning the belt for no good reason whatsoever.
Let’s take a look at the Pay Pew View matches he had during that run and see how many of them anyone remembers as “special” or “memorable” or anything other than “blah.”
TLC 2011- Punk main events in a triple threat vs. Miz and Alberto. Do you remember why they did this? Me either. But Punk was on the PPV poster so I guess that’s something, right?
Royal Rumble 2012- Non main event match vs. Dolph Ziggler. Anyone remember why? No. Why not? Because this was a one-off match with no history to it.
Elimination Chamber 2012- OPENING MATCH, Punk defends his title against such strong opponents as The Miz, Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler and R-Truth. Jericho was in the match as well but that’s, what, one legit main event opponent in a chamber bout for the main title? You know what main evented this PPV? John Cena vs. Kane. Yeah. Special title run indeed.
WrestleMania 28- Non main-event match against Chris Jericho with a pretty crappy build for such great superstars. This could have been an incredible Mania feud. Instead we got some half-assed feud revolving around Punk’s straight edge personality. Totally non-memorable. And while the match was good, much better than Punk had ever had in a single’s bout at Mania, this is such a disappointment and played second fiddle to Cena-Rock I. Yeah. Historic title run but not the main storyline. Once again Punk gets shafted for Cena.
Extreme Rules 2012- Non main event rematch against Jericho, forgotten this time because of Cena-Lesnar. Blah. Your title run is so important you get put in the backseat in favor of ANOTHER returning part-timer and a non-champion in a feud that essentially meant nothing?
Over the Limit 2012- Non main event match against Daniel Bryan. Awesome, awesome match but yet further proof Punk was a forgotten/overlooked champion. This match was epic and exactly what you would expect from two incredible talents like Punk and Bryan but, in my opinion, when a match like this plays second-fiddle to John Cena against John Laurinaitis, WWE creative is doing you a great disservice.
No Way Out- non main-event triple-threat against Kane and Daniel Bryan. Anyone remember what stands out about this feud? Exactly. Anyone remember why this was built up? Exactly. By the way, want to know why this match wasn’t the main event? That historic bout between John Cean and Big Show. Yeah. Definitely an important title run.
Summerslam 2012- So Punk can’t get over a John Cena-Big Show “feud” so why not take both on in a triple threat match? That’ll ensure a main event at the second-biggest show, right? Wrong. Punk gets forgotten about again in a thrown-together shitshow of a match. The most memorable aspect of this feud was the night Punk hit the GTS on the Rock and that had nothing to do with this. Oh, and by the way, you know why Punk wasn’t in the main event? Brock Lesnar and HHH needed to stink the joint out. Very special title run indeed.
Night of Champions 2012- main event match against John Cena. So Punk gets a chance to name his opponent, picks Cena on the condition Cena calls him ‘Best in the World.” Cena doesn’t, gets title match anyway. That’s the kind of brilliant writing Punk’s had on this run. And if that wasn’t enough, this match ends with a dusty finish as well because, well, you can’t have your champion cleanly defeat the real face of your company cleanly at a PPV right?
Hell in the Cell 2012- Punk main events and it’s not against John Cena! Yeah! He’s even on the poster! Yeah. And how do we reward that? Give him a pointless match against Ryback, who clearly isn’t ready for that spot. The feud essentially consisted of Ryback being built up as the monster and Punk the cowardly champion. Yeah, that’s how you give your title run some real cred. Yawn.
Survivor Series 2012- Punk takes on Ryback and John Cena. Anyone remember this? Not likely. You probably do remember the moment of this PPV as the Shield debuted but, apart from that, this match meant absolutely nothing. Not something I envision seeing on a future Punk DVD.
TLC 2012- Punk injured, probably from shitty booking. Misses the PPV
Royal Rumble 2013- Punk gets to not only lose to a part-timer in the Rock, ending this allegedly memorable title run, but gets to do so to allow the Rock to never defend show up on TV in the process. And while Punk did get a memorable month feud with Taker and a nice match at Mania, I’d hardly say this was a worthwhile way to end a supposedly “big” title run.

Bottom line: Punk was an afterthought for the majority of this title run and, when he wasn’t, he was in one-off feuds that either didn’t make sense, were time-fillers, or were put in so he could be put in the backseat to showcase part timers.
That’s a whole lot of nothing.
In fact, let me ask you this: Would you buy a DVD chronicling this 434-day title run? I know I wouldn’t.

Let's not forget the absolute burial of a segment just prior to the Raw 1000 heel turn in which fucking Eve Torres asks him about not being a main event champion.

Big E drops his last name. When asked, he sent this tweet:

"I sold 'Langston' for a Segway and a couple of 40s."

    Ha.
