Watching the replays, the GK wasn't that far from getting a hand to it.

England (the country) needs to get its head out of its ass because it is killing England (the team). Fuck a bunch of EU bullshit. The EPL needs to have English players on the field. German, Italian, and Spanish league teams are have their best domestic players on the field. England is swamped with foreigners. The results are evident.

Does England ever not disappoint at the World Cup? Seem like a prevailing theme at every WC I've watched.

Can you imagine the screaming we'd hear if a football player had been allowed right back in a game after getting knocked out like the guy from Uruguay?

All the stories have been told
Of kings and days of old
    But there's no England now

That's not even close to being England's problem.

First and foremost, England's national team's self-image is rooted in outdated views of how to play the game and what constitutes "English" soccer. They should learn from their club teammates of other nationalities, because damn near all of them come from countries with far greater international success.

Also, England would be well served to develop better players. The top English players are in the EPL -- and they aren't nearly as good as people like to think.

@BBCSporf FACT: After years of waiting, England are finally as good as Spain.

You'll have to pardon my soccer ignorance, but is that because those league's have different rules restricting the number of foreign players? Or might it just be because there are more top flight German, Italian and Spanish players?

That Deadspin comment about Uruguay being the Clemson of South American football could very easily apply to England and European football.

Rooney was England's best player by a long shot today, but man he has to look back and wonder how he didn't have at least a hat trick.
