Especially, since the rankings I saw had Spain No. 1.

Particularly enjoyed one in a pink top at Copacabana Beach.

I would agree. And that's two straight World Cups the U.S. has moved on now. That has to count for something, I guess no matter how you want to dismiss the round of 16. I know Germany controlled possession by a long shot, but really other than their goal how many great chances did they have before that? The shot Howard saved right before the goal? I thought they actually played pretty decent D. I was hoping an equalizer would sneak in there some how, but you can't be too unhappy about this, especially how the Portugal game ended. They have another game.

Remind me to send a gift basket to Team Portugal.

Let him play next week, with the tacit agreement among all opponents that the first time he pulls any shit (esp. cheap shots or flagrant flopping) he's to be fucking turfstomped in a big way -- kicks to the groin, ribcage and head preferred.

The pussy-ass flopping would end instantly if the floppers knew they were subject to get the living holy shit kicked out of them while they were lying on the turf weeping. They'd dry their baby tears and get off their asses in a hurry then.

So they've made the round of 16 in 4 of the last 6?

The U.S. hasn't put decent back-to-back World Cups together since I guess you can say the modern era for this team started in 1990. They did make the quarters in one of those. They've been competitive in the World Cup against every "power" they've played during that time. To advance twice in a row is a step forward in my mind. Yes, the next step is to win in the next round.

If Russia beats Algeria today, they're in, right?

There's a big difference between women's basketball and a sport where you can get dominated and get one lucky moment and win 1-0.

I think it would take making the semifinals to really get people's attention.

I'm not saying that's fair, but I think that's what it will take.

This year, that would likely require them beating Argentina, which is not going to happen.

Baseball teams have been doing it for decades.
