Regression to the mean was too busy picking on Vogelsong.

    This series is over.
Ned played right into their hands by starting four left-handed bats.
Giants in six, just as FART predicted.

I just hope Mr. Regression waits two more games to harangue Pablo Sandoval (career OPS 100 points higher in postseason).

Chris Sale has a similar length contract to Bumgarner that actually pays him even less money ($2.5Million less thru 2017). Sale also doesn't cross the 8-figure threshold until 2017. His contract also has two club option years in 2018 & 2019 for similar money.

When you consider Sale's WARP in the last three seasons are 3.7 + 4.0 + 4.7 vs. Bumgarner's 2.4 + 3.0 + 3.5, that makes Chris Sale a "better value" even without considering that Sale pitches in the American League where it's harder to pitch since you face a DH instead of a pitcher.

Eh, six of one, half-dozen of the other. Sale's much-discussed injury risk (and supposedly his injury future) would have me a little more worried about that contract. And you would not expect to get this kind of volume and quality out of him. Sale threw 174 innings this year, Bumgarner was 214 in the regular season and is past 260 total now but has kept on humming.

Bumgarner has a 4.15 lifetime ERA in both the NLDS and the NLCS.

What happens to his clutchiness then?

What he's done in the World Series trumps that.

He gets pulled from the rotation and has to go meet with Dave Righetti every day. That's what happened in 2012 anyway, which are the starts that drove that ERA up. After his Righetti penance he returned to the rotation and went seven scoreless in the World Series.

I hope he keeps it up. It's fun. Baseball could use some new Mr. Octobers, and he's a real star, not a David Freese.
