Texas should be a top ten job.

I'm no Pat Forde but the move doesn't surprise me. Watched four Texas games this year. They looked awful in all four.

For everyone crying about Barnes and 16 of 17, did they watch Texas play this season?

Texas coaches can be a victim of being the biggest influence. If Oklahoma State or West Virginia or Iowa State have better seasons, you look around in Austin and wonder how that should happen.

If I was Texas, I would go after Shaka over Marshall. Don't get me wrong, you can't go wrong with either one...

    Agreed. I would as well.

Marshall is very much an imperial coach. Shaka would shake the town into showing up at the games until he gets the system in place.

Most players don't give half a shit about how cool of a college town it is. They care who the coach is and if the coach can get them ready for the pros.

And if all their buddies can see them play on TV.

Right. Kentucky is the school where most of the top hoops players want to go and Alabama is the school where most of the top football players want to go. Not that either city is a shithole, but I doubt too many are going there because Lexington or Tuscaloosa are such great college towns.

Texas is one of those places where if you have the right coach there, they should be unstoppable. It just hasn't worked out like that. Texas is usually very good, it just hasn't resulted in the number of titles that one would expect in football and men's basketball.

I like the move. It's funny because Tennessee has had a similar level of success as Texas in the tournament. They usually make the tournament, they've had some nice Sweet 16 and Elite Eight runs, but they haven't really been close to winning a title.

As has been said on this thread many times, No. 2 in the SEC is generally up for grabs every year. You can't really say that in the Big 12, which had three No. 3 seeds in this year's NCAA tournament.

The board's resident Vol fanboi loves the Barnes hire.

Arguably has the greatest resume of any coach UT has ever hired, in anything other than baseball.

I think his wife is from Knoxville, or at least went to UT.

Two Elite Eights, one Final Four. That was the problem for Barnes.

Alabama's going to be happy just to be getting into the tournament instead of watching Bruce Pearl do it. A bit less pressure perhaps... but they're talking about $20m over 6 years, and that will generate expectations and pressure all its own. Add in that Alabama fans are not known for realistic expectations.
