I'm not sure how you get that from what he said.

The point is that in close games, which would seemingly reveal something about his ability as a tactician, he lost eight out of nine times.

    Huh?

Unless you think coaching acumen can make a difference of 10 to 15 points -- which would be a highly, highly suspect proposition even for a guy like Izzo or Coach K -- I think you'd have to agree that Geno's strategy and decision-making aren't adding to those wins. But when UConn does find itself in trouble, he isn't adding a whole lot there either.

Yep. Taurasi is skipping the WNBA this season because the Russians are paying her more than the league maximum as a bonus to rest. Her base salary there is $1.5M.

I was under the impression that women played for love of the game. No?

So he draws up plays in those situations and we have to assume they didn't make shots.

Is that because the plays sucked, or because the shots didn't go in?

    How do you qualify "decision-making"?

If this goes for all coaches, men or women, where does that put Boeheim, what with 40 years there and just 1 title?

I guess I'm just not understanding how being 1-8 in single-digit losses makes him pedestrian. Maybe he drew up great plays that didn't pan out.

This really isn't a very difficult concept.

    LTL, I get the concept.

I just don't agree with the 1-8 in close games being a damning point against him. Great he's 1-8 in those games.

    I'll take 900+ wins and 10 titles.

John Wooden didn't win a title till his 17th year.

Well there you go then. That doesn't do anything to address the actual reason he has won those titles -- because he gets 50 to 75 percent of the top recruits in the nation -- and I think most basketball fans would say a coach's record in close games is a pretty effective way to determine his impact on close games, especially if his record in close games is .111 and his record in other games is .986. But "titles = best" keeps you warm.

I have absolutely no idea how the John Wooden reference is supposed to connect.

He recruited the best player out of my area one year with basically no intention of ever playing her real minutes, simply to keep her away from Notre Dame. He can do stuff like that.

There's no context to "impact" ... *Why* is he 1-8 in those games the last 4 years?

Who here has watched those 9 games and can say with certainty, Oh, it's because he called the wrong play in such and such situation or something to that effect.

Can we get judge's ruling on that?

Who can say that Joe Mauer won four batting titles because he's a good hitter? Maybe he caught a lot of lucky bounces those years.
