Hell, even Cervelli's contract isn't elite. He'll be making $10M per year. And is three years a "long-term" extension? He's outside the top 15 catchers in total bases. He has no home runs, 20 RBI and five - FIVE - extra base hits. That's a hell of a loose definition of "elite."

Hey, take it up with the Pirates. Here are the five catches signed thru at least 2019:

    Salvador Perez
    Russell Martin
    Yan Gomes
    Buster Posey
    Francisco Cervelli

What does that tell you about those guys? Not much.

Gomes has a .216 OBP and his $4M/year contract is indicative of such. It's certainly not elite, even if they gave him six years.

It tells me the Pirates think Cervelli is pretty good. And the Pirates don't make nearly as many mistakes as the Indians. (What a world we live in where the Pirates are good)

You called Cervelli elite and said the Yankees allowed two elite catchers to leave NY because Girardi hates them and is threatened by them. That's a far sight different than, "The Pirates think Cervelli is pretty good."

You mean Bautista and Encarnacion being two of the best power hitters in the majors over the last few years means more than Martin being a red ass and a leader?

Adding Donaldson and Price didn't hurt either

I must have missed all those titles Bautista and Encarnacion won with the Blue Jays.
