Yeah, that was it. I was there. Couldn't believe they stayed in the game.

You going to start cursing at me for old times' sake? This has been far too fucking civil. :D

The question is does this lead to a larger point, that the Yankees have done a piss-poor job of building the current roster. Is that what you are thinking, because we would absolutely agree on that. It takes a significant level of incompetence for a team with those resources to build such a flawed roster.

About 10 years too late but the Red Sox finally retired Wade Boggs' number

Pitcher for the Cardinals -- Mike Leake -- is wearing 8. Never seen a pitcher wear 8.

Stroman is 6 for the Jays. Any other single digit pitchers?

Kyle Drabek used to wear No. 4 for the Jays, Josh Towers was 7.

As in the old days, I have lost track of what I'm arguing.

Yeah, the Yankees have done a terrible job in just about every facet of building a team the last several years. They never should have let go of Martin in the first place. It's not like somebody gave him a Robinson Cano-esque offer. They got outbid by THE PIRATES.

I would not start a team with Francisco Cervelli. He would not be the first catcher I'd pick. Or the third. But the definition of elite is lowered at catcher, and he's there. Maybe he wont be there by October, I don't know. But I trust the Pirates knew what they were doing when they signed him (again, what world is this). The Yankees never gave him a real shot and dumped him for nothing. I'm willing to chalk it up to organizational incompetence, but Girardi could barely conceal his contempt for Cervelli.

Oh the sequence that just took place ...

Leake induces an infield pop-up. He goes for it as does Alchemys Diaz. They bump into each other and the ball pops out of Diaz's glove -- but Yadier is there to snag it in mid-air. Can't get any luckier.

On the next pitch, Espinosa jacks it out for a 2-1 lead.

Even at catcher, I don't think the bar for elite is low enough for a guy like Cervelli to be considered elite, but that is subjective. Also, I don't think the Pirates actually outbid the Yankees for Martin. The Yankees just weren't particularly interested in keeping him.

The Pirates have been making good decisions....when ownership allows it. :)
