Those thrifty Pirates fall to three games below .500, six games under since the Melancon deal, with an 8-0 loss to the Reds. Ryan Vogelsong, one of their failed attempts at playing the scrap heap, gave his team very little chance by allowing five in the second inning and six in four innings.

At least they didn't have to go to their closer today. :)

Melancon would have won that game.

Five-inning Jake managed to eke out an extra 1/3 of an inning last night.

"Five-inning Jake" is averaging 6.4 innings per start. He is currently 14th in the majors with 179 1/3 innings pitched and 11 of the pitchers ahead of him have at least one more start. He has a 2.91 ERA and 1.05 WHIP on the season. Arrieta's numbers certainly aren't on last year's level, but they are quite good.

Is he more likely to go 5 innings or 8 innings in his next start?

If at least 6 of the 11 pitchers ahead of him have a 2.91 ERA or higher but 1.05 WHIP or lower and can raise their hands with pride at throwing 75% of at least 179 1/3 innings without admitting to shoulder soreness and elbow tightness ... then maybe.

You tell me, but try to back up your statement properly. Try using accurate statistics to figure it out. Just for a change of pace.

As long as he's in the top 10 in ERA, he can continue to go five innings, for all I care. Our bullpen is good enough.

Orioles in Boston for a three-game set. The O's are actually 15-11 at Fenway the last three seasons and have won both series there this year. Tonight feels like a loss ... Wade Miley vs. David Price. Yuck.

Baltimore leaves Detroit two games up on the Tigers for the wild card, but Detroit gets four free wins against Minnesota this week, so we'll see.

They should just skip the Twins series.
