    Davis has been slumping pretty hard the last week (2-23, 10 Ks in his last seven), so I'm sure a questionable call didn't help his psyche. Gotta move on to the next pitch.

    From Wiki ...

    Fingers was born in Steubenville, Ohio to George Michael Fingers and Edna Pearl (née Stafford) Fingers.[1][2] His father (who had also played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals and roomed with Stan Musial), worked in a Steubenville steel mill. George Fingers came home from work fed-up one day, said "That's it, we're moving to California", and sold the house for US$1,500 and bought a car and took the family to Cucamonga. They could not afford hotels so they slept in sleeping bags beside the highway. After getting to California George Fingers had to eventually go back to work in another steel mill.[3][4]

    Looks like free win week didn't work out well for the Tigers and Royals this week.

    Just heard the best line about last night's Dodgers-D'Backs kerfuffel from Mike Kruko:
    "We saw a replay of it and he threw right at his zipper. It was going right for his crotch. If he hadn't bunted it, it would have been bad. So I think he reacted the way any of us would have if someone threw at our crotch."

    At the risk of considering "free wins" a la @exmediahack , the Mets don't play a team above .500 the rest of the way:

    Twins (3)
    Braves (3)
    Phillies (4)
    @Marlins (3)
    @Phillies (3)

    Meanwhile the Cardinals and Giants are facing each other in a four-game series this weekend. After that the Giants have six more left against the Dodgers and the Cardinals have three left at the Cubs. Seems like the odds very much favor the Mets taking one of the WC spots and the Giants and Cards duking it out for the other.

    It did not.

    Royals turned rancid in a hurry. Time to get away from baseball for a few months and return for the last run in 2017 with this core.

    I didn't go game through game but I guess the Royals went something like 4-21 or 5-20 against the AL West this year. Dreadful.

    That's why it was a pipe dream for them to make the playoffs. it's one thing to get back into it, it's another to sustain a ridiculous winning percentage and overtake 4 or 5 teams, regardless how "easy" those teams are

    They lost to awful teams by playing awful baseball. No biggie. Been a fun run the last three years.

    It's baseball not football. Awful teams win at least 40% of the time.

    The steel mill in Fontana, no doubt. The site of which is now the Auto Club Speedway.
