This is a good deal for Strasburg. He gets his money now in case the ligament goes boom again and he gets to be coddled and fade into the background forever in D.C. He is not equipped to be The Man, or to go somewhere else on a big money deal.

He'll probably get like $14M/year for longer than 7 years. Likely similar to the Scherzer deal.

Reports also say he gets an extra $1M each year he hits 180 IP.

Robin Ventura and his grand slam single for the Mets say hi.

Interesting ending to the Nats-Tigers game.

Locking up Strasburg gives the Nats a chance to match the Mets rotation for the foreseeable future. If Scherzer gets back on track, Giolito is as good as predicted and Joe Ross is the real deal, that rotation will be pretty nasty.

I love Bryce Harper. He is getting a suspension for that one. Just a game or two.

I think the bigger ifs are with the Mets. Harvey's a goner after this year. DeGrom is already 28. The arm is not meant to do what Syndergaard's is doing. We all know the Mets won't re-sign all five guys, and we all know they won't go out and spend big bucks to bring someone else in. The odds of the best-case scenario--an all-time rotation peaking at the same time in the same uniform--actually happening aren't good. (But the more guys they lose, the longer Colon can stick around, which is never bad)

    Who expected longer?

This is probably one of them, but if you're Dusty Baker, aren't you pretty much obligated to go out there and get run yourself after Harper gets tossed? Gotta support your star.

So a manager can only show his support by getting tossed from a tie game in the 9th inning? Baseball is weird sometimes.

Harvey is arbitration eligible for each of the next two years. If the Mets can't reach an agreement with him, surely they'll go to arbitration with him. He's not going anywhere until 2019 (maybe 2018 if they can't resign him and decide to trade him and get something for him - depends on if they're contenders or not).

DeGrom is 27 (28 in June), but he doesn't have a lot of mileage on that arm. There's a good chance he'll remain nasty for at least four years. Matz and Syndergaard are arguably their best pitchers, they're 24 and 23, respectively, and they won't become free agents until 2022.

The chances of an all-time rotation peaking at the same time in the same uniform, of course, are not that good by definition (all-time rotations are called all-time because they're not common). But the Mets are set up pretty well to be as good or better than a rotation of Strasburg, Scherzer, Ross and Giolito for at least two years, maybe longer depending on what happens with Harvey (or his replacement).
