The more I look at it I don't hate it from either side... but I don't really get it.

I figure the Raptors did it for at least one of three reasons:

    1) They think Kawhi will sign.
    2) They want out from DeRozan's contract to rebuild because they don't think this team can compete.
    3) They're going to flip Kawhi to the Lakers, and won't demand the ransom that San Antonio wanted.

    I'm guessing it's 2 and 3.

The Spurs did OK, but I'm still surprised they didn't focus on picks.

I sure as hell would if I'm Toronto.

I'll wait for the media conference before saying for sure....but the owner's (Larry Tanenbaum) history is to bet on selling Toronto. Even if that's not possible here, I could see the Raptors saying: let's go for it, for a year

Won't the NBA relocate the franchise with Canada being a security threat? [/crossthread]

It's an expensive one, if that's all it is.

The history of sports is littered with crazier deals, that's for sure.

They know they can't win with the team they had. Take a one year run at it and rebuild after if he does not sign. You will not have DeRozan's contract to have to worry about and you will have millions in cap space.

I like the deal for the Raps, they were just going to be in no mans land if they didn't do something.

I don't see it as all that expensive. You dump a salary you would not want after next year and it's a top 20 protected pick.

Yeah, the key to it is definitely how much they actually wanted DeRozan at that salary. If they wanted to dump it then it's a good move, particularly if they can flip Leonard.

They can now flip him to the Western Conf.

IF they flipped him to LA for say Ingram and Kouzma, imagine how good that looks; get out from a stagnant makeup and DeMars K.
