I know everyone is watching MNF, but holy shit, what a duel between Ovechkin and Carey Price tonight in Montreal. Then Braden Holtby stones a Canadien in OT, and Lars Eller pots the game winner as the Bell Centre crowd rained boos down on him. That was a fun hockey game.

The Buffalo Sabres have won six in a row. It's still early, but goodness gracious.

I think they're legit, having watched a bit of their game against Tampa the other day. I don't think they're ready to win a playoff series, but they'll be in the thick of the playoff race all year. Skinner was a great add for Buffalo.

Saw that. I thought there was a decent chance they could turn the corner when I was looking at the season. There is a lot of talent on that team.

My Rangers are on a tear, too. They are 8-1-1 in their last 10. Last night they beat a Dallas team that has way more talent than they do. It's fun to watch, because David Quinn now has them buying into his "outwork other teams" style. He has players like Vlad Namestnikov and Pavel Buchnevich, who were a little hesitant, forechecking, crashing the net, etc. Ryan Spooner was the one guy who didn't seem to want to buy into it all, and I was starting to hate his play, but they dumped him off to Edmonton for Ryan Strome. Strome may have been a disappointment in Edmonton, but in two games so far, he seems like a much better fit. Willing to get his hands dirty, skates hard, kills penalties, etc.

If I had a criticism early on, it was that the team line was that they were going to develop young players, and even though Brett Howden got minutes almost from the start, because they are so overloaded at center, they had Filip Chytil on the fourth line most nights -- when he wasn't scratching him. Worse, some nights he was getting only 6, 7 minutes. And he was weighted down by playing with wingers like Cody McLeod and Vinnie Lettieri. A few games ago, Quinn moved Chytil to the wing and started playing him with some top 6 players. And he has scored goals in 4 games in a row, after goose eggs in the first 17 games. I feel like I am watching a future star start to blossom. He is really creative and really talented with the puck. I have no idea if this will keep up. The Rangers have won 4 of their games in the shootout. And many games they are getting outshot by a lot, but Lundqvist has been a wall. But if the season ends today, they are a playoff team, not even a wild card.

I really hope Skinner gets a deal taken care of in Buffalo. He's been a tremendous addition. I never thought bringing Pominville back would be so amazing. I really figured it'd be fun for us fans to remember how great of an asset he was during the Drury-Briere years as just a nostalgia move; but this is a bonus. I hope they're legit, but I'll hold back until the all-star game.

There's always been a school of thought in the NHL is that Thanksgiving is a good starting point where playoff teams start to separate themselves. That said, I'm not buying that the Penguins won't be there in the end. I don't hate that they're bringing up the caboose in the Metro right now, though. :)

The Caps were 10-9-1 and looking to fire their coach a year ago. They won like 16 of their next 18 or something absurd.
It's the quarter pole. The race hasn't started. Pretty sure the Pens were in the lower reaches last year at this time, too.
Don't bet shit on the way anything looks now.

Yeah, and last year sort of threw some cold water on that trend. Teams in playoff position at Thanksgiving that missed the playoffs: Red Wings, Islanders, Blues, Canucks, Flames.

It's the quarter-pole. LONG way to go

But, yeah, wouldn't break my heart to see the Penguins miss.

Admittedly outing myself but, he played at Minnesota Duluth. (The locals get persnickety about the hyphen and REALLY persnickety about the Twin Cities campus). That program, which has now played in back-to-back national championships, has been generating an alarming level of talent lately. In addition to Pionk (who is also from the Duluth area), Alex Iafallo has been one of the few positives in the Kings' season so far, Joey Anderson is one of the Devils' best prospects and 2016-17 starting goalie Hunter Miska made his NHL debut for Arizona last week in mop-up duty, and that's not counting any of the other 10 UMD Bulldogs throughout the NHL.
