    Bunch. Of. Jerks.

Last time they clinched a playoff spot was 10 years ago - to the day.

    About. Freaking. Time.

Caps clinch the Metro. One berth left up for grabs in the East, and Columbus clinches it with two points in its last two. Considering those two are the Rangers and Senators (albeit back to back and on the road), that seems likely.

Caps-Canes looking increasingly likely next week, though I think if Carolina wins Saturday in regulation or OT and Pittsburgh loses in regulation, the Canes slot up into third thanks to the ROW tiebreaker.

While avoiding Tampa right away is the big goal, Whalercanes haven't fared well against Washington lately.

Used to be than Semin killed the Whalercanes and Ovechkin wasn't the issue. Then Whalercanes signed Semin and he killed them from within. Then Ovechkin got his game working against the team. They've done painfully little to slow down the Caps.

Listen ... getting to the playoffs is a serious accomplishment for this team. But they must maintain the focus if they want to stay longer than a week or so.

It is kind of an accomplishment for that bunch of jerks to have gotten to the playoffs. Another team, where the sum is more than the parts. Although, maybe they kind of don't get enough due from people like me outside of the market. Sebastian Aho and Tuovu Teravainen are players, and as much as nobody ever seems to want to hang onto Dougie Hamilton, maybe he has found a home in Carolina.

I like the Carolina roster. I think the Canes are still a year away from serious contender status, and getting into the playoffs is a big step. I think they're here to stay for the long haul. Mrazek showed some flashes in that Caps-Canes home and home last week that he could be the hot goalie type in the playoffs, which concerns me a bit. But truthfully, if I had to pick one team out of that mix that I wanted to see in the first wild card spot, it was Carolina. We'll see if it holds. Columbus strikes me as a team that can give people a lot of trouble if it just gets in.

Sam, had a good time a couple of years back at PNC swapping stories with Canes fans about how much we both hated Semin.

In Raleigh, he has two nicknames: "The Enigma" and, more popularly, "He Who Shall Not Be Named."

A living heart donor. Rarely has someone gotten so little out of so much obvious ability.

Semin? Don't even get me started.

Well, one quick one. At a game one night with my son. Semin is on the right side of the ice and someone shoots a pass to the other side. Semin is there and blasts one at an odd angle right into the net. How he got there so fast we'll never know but it was an amazing play. And my son said, "Can you imagine how good he'd be if he actually gave a shit?"

Lots of talent, not a lot of want-to. Did he end up in the KHL? Montreal briefly and then gone?

Kovalev is a perfect example of that. All the talent in the world, however, only cared 30% of the time.

Bob Cole has been calling Hockey Night in Canada games for 50 years and no one, and I mean no one, is better

I wonder how much Florida regrets getting rid of Gallant in a panic move?
