Heh. Florida dumping Gallant. Caps dumping GMGM. Yeah ... I know you and Cosmo and others saw some desperation from GMGM to get the Caps over the top, but I kind of wonder if Ted Leonsis pulled the trigger a little too quickly.

But there's no way a GM gets Vegas to a Final in the team's first season and back to the playoffs a season later by accident.

And yeah ... until the Whalercanes finally got back in the playoffs, Gallant waiting for a taxi outside the ESA after getting beat by the Whalercanes was an interesting moment in Raleigh.

GMGM definitely made some desperation moves. The Erat deal being exhibit 1. And hiring Adam Oates as the head coach ... anyway. You're right, he didn't make that roster in Vegas by accident. But there was serious pressure to get something done in Washington, understandably so.

Just went on Seatgeek to check prices, and the tickets are way more expensive in Raleigh for games 3 and 4 than in Washington for the first two games. Glad the Canes are back, but I'm rooting for a sweep. :)

New coach in Florida. Great hire by the Panthers.

    That is a great hire.

GMGM did a good job in DC for a long time but the time was right for a change. He made a great coaching hire in Vegas and worked the expansion draft and all that surrounded it quite well. Found a bunch of guys who were ready to make the next step. That team is legit.

But GMBM has done OK in DC, too. Not sure the Trotz mess was his doing, I suspect he would have paid the man (and do I ever wish he had). The Shattenkirk deal didn't work out but everyone in hockey would have made that move. The deadline deals he's made the past two seasons have been very good. He kept a Stanley Cup roster intact around some real cap issues. AND THEY WON THE DAMN CUP, which GMGM never did, and have to be considered at least a contender to do it again. Unlikely, perhaps. But definitely possible.

Florida fired Gallant early in a panic move - wasn't it the season after he should have been coach of the year?

I haven't kept up with the inner workings of Florida exactly, so I may have some of this wrong. But it still sounds like a mess to me. When they got rid of Gallant, I thought they had sort of semi-retired Dale Tallon and handed over player personnel decisions to a bunch of kids with a computer database. All because Vincent Viola sounded like a mercurial dipshit.

Then when I looked back a year or two later, Tallon was back to being the GM. And obviously Queneville is there because of his relationship with Tallon. My question is, Viola supposedly had stepped away from the team when Donald Trump was going to appoint him to something-or-other within the administration and he was going to divest, right? That didn't happen, though, did it? So, what happens if he decides to blow up something that is working once again because he has to prove he's the smartest guy in the world?

He talked with the media for the first time in a month on Sunday during his exit meetings. He said he felt good at the beginning of the season, but his hip got worse as it wore on. The 3-in-4 and 4-in-6 gamers really took a toll. He said he struggles to even put on his socks.

He is going off all medication -- it'll take a month. He is going to consult with 3 or 4 of the top hip surgeons in the country to see if it gets any better with treatment. And then make a decision. He said there is no other surgery that can help him return. Hip replacement is the other option and that will end his career.

My season has come down to rooting for a ping pong ball tonight.

Good luck to those of you that still have a dog in the hunt.

    First-round picks:
    EAST
    TBL d. CBJ in 6
    WSH d. CAR in 6
    NYI d. PIT in 7
    BOS d. TOR in 7

    WEST
    WPG d. STL in 7
    CAL d. COL in 5
    NSH d. DAL in 7
    VGK d. SJ in 7

I'm sure I'll have some more concrete thoughts about Caps-Canes later. Carolina is dangerous, but I still would have rather the Caps played them over Pittsburgh or Columbus. The Kempny injury is a real wild card, not because Nick Jensen isn't capable, but because it looks like Washington is having trouble trying to find the right opposite pair for John Carlson.

I'm shocked the Rangers didn't get the top pick. Patrick Ewing is working on his skating and is ready to go.
