On the other hand, Bill Moos was previously the AD at Oregon, a place with a very low ceiling until Phil Knight came to the rescue.

By the way: Is Frank Solich's one of the oddest in college football history? Gets promoted to succeed a legend, does well, gets quickly whacked anyway. That part's common in history. But he then accepts a lesser gig, succeeds and never leaves. Never even gets mentioned for another gig while winning regularly at a place presumed to be a professional graveyard.
Closest thing I can think of in basketball is Gene Bartow, unfairly run off at UCLA. He goes to this new thing called UAB and wins and stays. Difference between UAB and Ohio U is that the Blazers had no bad history before his arrival. They had no history. But he built it and never left.

He was 62 when he got Ohio to nine wins the first time, 65 when he did it the second time, which was more than a decade ago. And the main scheme thing he was known for was an offense no one ran (I think he was power spread by the age 65 team, maybe). Folks don't like to hire old.

Also had a DUI right in the range of being a bounce back.

I think Callahan was so big there because it was a good lesson about having an identity when you're that kind of program. Nebraska and Michigan thought they were so big that their identity and style were something they could cast aside because the program was that good. They were not correct.

That's why Iowa and Wisconsin are running shit in the same spirit each year. They know what they're about.

True. Gotta be one of the oldest hires in recent MAC history, I would think.

I was truly stunned Rocky Long went back there as the DC. I realize the state has its challenges given how much land is owned by the feds and untaxable for state funds - but UNM is ranked just ahead of East Carolina and Montana State in the national rankings. Davie does seem to make good points though. Scholarship checks being late and not promoting your team's GPA (if its good)? Thats sports administration 101.

I suspect Rocky went back cause he loved the idea of low NM taxes but equally wanted to help out his former player who is the new head coach and seems like a home-run hire so far.

Davie not being clear on the concept that UNM is a basketball school may have been his first mistake.

I can see how that might be a problem.
