But probably not until Feb. 29, the final day of the month that includes the Super Bowl. Just a guess on my part. Jerry's the kind of guy who would play that card.

There is firing a guy and then there is holding on to him long enough where he can't get a job elsewhere. I don't see Jones doing that to Garrett. If anything, I'd think he'd want for him to land on his feet elsewhere to show the world he isn't the only one who thinks he's a decent coach.

His contract is up January 14. That’s not too late to get a job. If Garrett had balls, he’d say that he doesn’t plan on signing an extension.

    Hue Jackson 3-36-1
    Gregg Williams 5-3
    Freddie Kitchens 6-10

    There’s a pattern there somewhere

Put Garrett in the MNF booth.

And I always figured DePodesta was gone when Dorsey came aboard. Is it the new "analytics? thing that is all the rage among owners. I guess the big question is if they've had him for four years - why hasn't anything come of it? Is there anything the Browns do that other teams are adopting?
    It's a cursed franchise.

What if they had made the playoffs and their season had extended beyond Jan. 14? Would he have been given a couple of one-week extensions not like a 10-day contract in the NBA?

It might be that his contract ends 21 days after the last game of the season to factor in the possibility of winning a playoff game or 2.
I read that his contract expires 1-14.

It seemed like the Browns were acquiring assets around 3 or 4 years ago - they took on Osweiler's contract and a second round pick in 2017 - but in Haslem-like fashion, he didn't have the stomach for losing like the Sixers did in the NBA. They've also been in a position to draft Watson, Jackson and almost anyone else the past five years, and before Baker, they basically picked the wrong guy or didn't pick a guy at all. Derek Anderson had a fluke Pro Bowl level year, and since then in the 2010s, their leading QBs by games played per year: Colt McCoy twice, Weeden, Jason Campbell, Hoyer, Josh McCown, Cody Kessler, Kizer and Baker twice.

The Cowboy starting quarterback list from 2001-2005 (basically the interregnum between Aikman and Romo) reads similarly. Guys like Quincy Carter, Clint Stoerner, Chad Hutchinson and Vinny Testaverde at the very end of his rope. But that was just five seasons inclusive. We're talking two decades-plus with the expansion Browns now.

They tossed Butch Davis out on his ass, and now they’d be thrilled to have 9-7.

The longer the Dallas deal goes on, the more likely it is they resign him.
He's given them a lot of years. They're not gonna jack him off like this.

It's pretty obvious that Jones knows that the rational decision is to fire Garrett, but his emotional commitment to the coach is keeping him from doing it.
