Wyking Jones out at Cal. I'm guessing either alums ponied up - there may be some interest from a big name (Musselman?) or both. Not buying the Kidd stuff. As great as he was as a player at Cal - it also landed the Bears in NCAA trouble.

Is Kidd a college grad? That’s a requirement per NCAA rules.
Re: Jones. I read that they decided to retain him but changed minds after one player responded to the retention news by announcing intent to transfer. Others met with the AD as well.
This was a cheap hire by a cash-strapped department. It ended predictably.

Bad move by Hunter. Probably different admissions standards. Tulane in awful shape. Can’t make SEC-style offers for players.

He's 55 - a tough age for coaches (esp. mid-major coaches wondering how many more offers they'll get) surprised he stayed at GSU for as long as he did considering his success. Heck - these days the AAC is a better hoops conference than the Pac-12.

Perhaps he realized this was going to be his shot to get paid? You go the tourney three times in five years in the Sun Belt and you know what your status is for opportunities. And they weren't terrible the season prior to this at 14-17.

You wonder if Bob Hoffman getting shown the door at Mercer played into his mind. Similar coaching profiles, perhaps there is a new AD at GSU.

Difference is Mercer hasn't been to the tourney since 2014. Hunter's bullet points are a lot stronger to fall back on. Now if he thinks -- as soon as we missed back-to-back tourneys, I'm gone and he is jumping before getting pushed then I can't blame him.

Mystery solved. Hunter's GSU contract was due to run out next year. That's on the AD.

What a terrible AD. How do you not extend him after last year?

Troy Dannen going back to the GSU well after Fritz football hire -- which is working at Tulane.
