Arizona State feels like it should be a sleeping giant kind of job. Good facilities. The rest of the Pac-12 is kind of down. There's enough talent in Arizona, Nevada and Southern California to go around. The eye candy on campus in Tempe is ... uh, nice. No idea why the Sun Devils can never seem to put it together. If I'm Hurley, I'd take that situation over St. John's.

ASU and sleeping giant in the same sentence - DRINK! Honestly between football and hoops, nobody understands why their department isn't more successful. Between the weather and the less than stringent academic requirements - it could be FSU West.

Not only are they not a sleeping giant, they just steeply decreased capacity at Sun Devil Stadium.

Mike DeCourcy wrote that Cronin wanted a bump in pay from 2.2 million and the schools was not interested in paying more. He gets 4 million a year at UCLA and probably figures he has a better chance to advance in the NCAA tournament at UCLA.

It is interesting to note that ASU's stagnation has occurred at the same time they've added teams in the NHL, MLB and NFL. Also kind of a trend with the Pac-12 in general. They've added a net of 11 major sports teams to their markets due to expansion and relocation and only added two markets with SLC and Denver.

I've wondered the same thing about San Diego St. The Aztecs will never be a power, but between the weather, location and coeds, they should be able to recruit better and be a solid mid major in revenue sports.

It's like San Diego, the capital of sports failures. That city hasn't won a title in any major sport since the the Chargers won the AFL in 1963. But ya never hear about it because the fans don't bitch as much as other cities. There's simply too much other stuff to concern yourself with bc the weather is so great. Same with Arizona.

Ya really wanna watch hoops when the weather is like that? I'd rather be outside.

SD State attendance has gone up about 20 percent since the Chargers left town. Also - they're building a new stadium to seat about 35k which they still rarely reach.

They had a nice run in basketball a few years back under Steve Fisher -- and having Kawhi Leonard didn't hurt -- but have regressed since he retired. Football never seems to be better than mediocre.

Rocky Long has prospered at New Mexico and San Diego State - he deserves a spot in the college football hall of fame if he isn't there already.

All the way back in the '80s, Pac-10 football folks feared that if ASU ever put it together, it would become a monster and dominate, citing all the reasons mentioned above. The Sun Devils did it under John Cooper in 1986 (winning the 1987 Rose Bowl over Michigan), but could not keep it going. Bad on them.

SDSU football won 32 games from 2015-17. They slipped a bit last year, but have been far better than mediocre under Rocky. They are constrained by MWC membership but have done very well in that league.
