After the deGrom deal quieted the wolves (seriously, does deGrom owe Thor a Rolex, or what?), the Mets announced that 1B prospect Pete Alonso has made the team out of Spring Training. I get that the Mets probably can't win in the court of public opinion, but it seems like their clubhouse must be on the verge of revolt if they're being this magnanimous.

It frustrates players and fans to keep a guy down for a couple weeks at the beginning of the season to gain an extra year of control, but it's really the only responsible choice — unless your players hate your organization and you need to buy some goodwill.

    It's a quote from a rival scout.
Not a rival player, manager, bench coach or nothing.
    It's a rival scout.
    Essentially useless.

    DeGrom-Scherzer is pretty good.

Can't believe he resisted the urge to call him uppity.

Yeah, if you like National League baseball...

jk. That is a great matchup. That's what I mean, though. Opening Day is normally one of those rare instances where you get a gem matchup, ideally between rivals. MLB basically treats it like any other freaking day, schedule-wise, and that's bad marketing.

Snell-Verlander is a strong one, too. Just because it's not the Red Sox playing doesn't mean they didn't put any thought into creating some buzz-worthy matchups.

dammit, I don't care about the rest of the league. I care about MY team!

    :D

EDIT: It's Opening Day, so of course there are going to be some great pitching matchups with every team starting its ace. It just so happens the reigning champions are getting sloppy seconds against a team that opened its season last week in another country. It's just bizarre that that's the capper on the day, no? Sox-Mariners? It's not like they faced off in the playoffs last year. Like Sox-Astros would be good. Or Sox-Dodgers. Then again, if I watched the Dodgers, I'd have @Batman's Vin Scully-dead hooker yarn in my head all game, and I don't think my sides would handle it.

And, when Senators v. 1 and v.2 were in Washington, there was always the Presidential opener, which started after the Reds game out of deference to history. I think the closest thing the Nats have come to that is the Presidents Race.

But it's like someone suggested uptopic. Start with your defending champ, like the NFL does. Make it a capital E event. Rock concert, parade, fireworks, whatever it takes. The NBA does the same, with the champs holding their ring ceremony on opening night. I'm not sure what hockey does, but I'm sure even Bettman does it better than baseball.

Just stop sending it to Japan in the middle of the night when most fans are still in spring training mode.
